There is still time to submit your name to run in school board or municipal government elections in Quinte, but I won’t be joining you. I will say, however, that it’s an experience well worth having and a job (if you are fortunate) that serves a vital role in our community. The deadline to submit your nomination papers is 2 pm this afternoon, along with the fee and the required signatures.
Inmate charged with assault at Warkworth Institution
The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a reported assault that occurred at a correctional facility in the Municipality of Brighton. On July 11, 2026, police received a report of an incident involving two inmates at Warkworth Institution. The victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Death at Joyceville Institution
An inmate at Joyceville Institution has died. Correction Service Canada has revealed that the 78-year-old died of apparent natural causes. The person’s name has not been revealed, due to a court-ordered publication ban. Next of kin has been notified. The person had been serving a six-year sentence since August 2024.
Accessibility improvements to the Napanee arena
Napanee has been the headlines a fair bit this week with ongoing projects. First, we learned that the roof has been fixed at the Old Town Hall, then plans continue to roll along that will transform the old CN rail line into an active transportation network. The latest note is about the Best & Bash Arena. Napanee has announced that they have installed accessible push button doors throughout the large arena. A $42,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Fund, helped make the project possible.
Annual maintenance shutdown for the QSWC pool area
It’s that time of year again. The City of Belleville will be closing the Templeman Aquatic Centre at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre. The annual shutdown for maintenance, will take place as of 4:30 p.m. on August 28th to September 20th. The pool change rooms will be unavailable from: Men’s pool change room: Closed Aug. 29 to Sept. 5 Women’s pool change room: Closed Aug. 29 to Sept. 5 Family change room: Closed Sept. 6 to Sept.
Cobourg woman facing impaired driving charges
Alex_Schmidt / Depositphotos.com Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges following a complaint from a member of the public. On August 16, 2026, at approximately 11:20 p.m., police received a traffic complaint regarding a passenger vehicle that was unable to maintain its lane while travelling eastbound on Highway 401 in Bowmanville. Officers located and stopped a vehicle matching the description provided on Division Street in Cobourg.
Two people facing drug trafficking charges in Campbellford
Two people from Campbellford have been charged in connection to a drug trafficking investigation. Officers from the Peterborough Northumberland Street Crime Unit arrested the two people today in Campbellford, with help from the canine unit. Officers found a quantity of suspected cocaine and Canadian currency. Police claim that one of the suspects had a prohibited device. A third person connected to the case, who has not been identified, was also taken into custody.
Bail violations and youth arrested, in latest Belleville Police report
Belleville Police responded to around 120 calls for service in the last 24-hours. Bail Violations On August 15, 2026, a 46-year-old male of no fixed address was arrested and charged in connection with a mischief investigation after a window at a downtown Belleville business was damaged. The accused was subsequently released on an Undertaking with conditions that included not attending within 100 metres of the business.
Cramahe teen charged in family dispute
Northumberland County OPP were called to an address Wednesday night in Cramahe Township. Officers received a report, that a youth had brandished an edged weapon during a verbal altercation at an address on Deele Road, shortly before 6:30 p.m. A 16-year-old boy was arrested. Police believe that in a previous incident, the teen brandished a firearm and took a vehicle without permission.
Five people running to be the next Belleville Mayor
Paul Fleming / Submitted. There are five people running to be the next mayor of Belleville. Old East Hill resident Paul Fleming has announced in a statement, that he has filed his nomination papers today. Fleming moved to Belleville in 2018 and currently runs a non-profit consulting firm in the city. Fleming is running, alongside mental health advocate Cynthia Black, comedian Kyle Woolven, Don Metzger, and current Mayor Neil Ellis.
