Anna Maria Mayor Mark Short told The Islander Sept. 24 via email that the contractor engaged by the city to perform the “finishing” work at the T-end of the city pier began on-site work preparations for the work that will follow in the near term. A meeting was held with the city contractor, project manager and staff and GSM, the restaurant operator for the pier and their contractor and architect to discuss logistics and a game plan for the final pier work.

Cornelia Zanetti, president for some 15 years of the organization known as All Island Denominations, an affiliation of the island’s churches, announced Sept. 22 that AID will cease operations Oct. 1. Zanetti said AID would not be able to assist clients after September and thanked all those who donated since AID formed in 1984. “We are no longer taking clients, but we will still donate this year to Anna Maria Elementary School for families who are needy” at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Matt McDonough, Holmes Beach digital and media strategist, took on the assignment from Mayor Judy Titsworth of reporting city business for the week ending Sept. 25. The city held a special meeting Sept. 22 regarding the annual budget ordinance, but no action was taken and the meeting was recessed until Sept. 25. A first reading was held Sept. 9, and Commission Chair Dan Diggins told The islander post-meeting on Sept.

Fishing inshore around Anna Maria Island seems to be in limbo as we hover between summer and fall conditions. With numerous days still reaching 90 degrees or higher, it may feel like summer, especially while fishing the backcountry areas of Tampa Bay southward to Sarasota Bay, but with the days beginning to shorten and over-night temperatures becoming tolerable once again, we’re getting a fresh taste of  “fall fishing.” The key right now is keeping an eye on the water temperatures.
