Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring reported the washback of a post-hatchling the week ending July 31. The sea turtle returned to the beach had already spent time in the Gulf of Mexico and finished its “swim frenzy,” the initial offshore push hatchlings make after leaving a nest. At the post-hatchling stage, sea turtles usually are riding the sargassum weed line out in the Gulf, surfacing now and then to feed.

Bradenton Beach’s next police chief is the department’s second in command. The city commission unanimously voted July 16 to appoint Lt. Lenard Diaz to become the police department’s next chief effective Oct. 1. That’s the same date Chief John Cosby becomes the city’s public works director. Cosby’s already serving as acting public works director, as well as head of the city’s emergency management team.
