Nesting notes: Coyote hits shorebird colonies

A coyote has dealt a blow to nesting shorebirds in Bradenton Beach. Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring volunteers discovered the coyote’s presence the morning of June 4, after two least tern chicks that hatched June 2 and 3 were missing. A coyote was spotted that evening and June 5. In the same period, black skimmer eggs were abandoned or damaged.

Sea turtle nesting activity on Anna Maria Island surged, with numbers reported May 29 doubling compared to the week prior, according to the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring. “So the turtles are in full nesting mode,” said AMITW executive director Kristen Mazzarella. “Our patrol teams have been busy working up all the crawls each morning.” Mazzarella said crews even observed a loggerhead sea turtle covering its nest before returning to the Gulf.
