The Lumberjack: An NAU tradition since 1914. Jackcentral.org is produced and maintained by staff of The Lumberjack newspaper and the Media Innovation Center in the School of Communication at Northern Arizona University.
Our goal is to bring the news that is important to you through an expanding variety of different media, including broadcast, web and print. The Lumberjack has been a Flagstaff staple since its founding as The Pine in 1914. In 1946, students voted to change the name to The Lumberjack, and the newspaper has gradually evolved into its current form as a weekly publication. Source

It was only a few minutes past 4 a.m. when Mitch Strohman woke up. It was the day after the NAU men’s basketball team suffered an early exit in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament in Boise, Idaho. The loss marked an end to Strohman’s career as the “Voice of the Lumberjacks,” and being trapped in a silent, dark hotel room with no one but himself added to the overwhelming rush of emotions. It wasn’t long before it set in that he had called his final game as a broadcaster.

ASNAU impeaches vice president of student advocacy
Associated Students of Northern Arizona University’s (ASNAU) Vice President of Student Advocacy (VPSA), Brooklyn Clayton, was impeached during the organization’s April 16 senate meeting after Sen. Sasha Gibson made the motion on multiple allegations of misconduct and communication issues. Over two-thirds of the senators voted to impeach Clayton during the three-hour meeting inside the University Union.

President Donald Trump came to speak at a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event at the Dream City Church in Phoenix on April 17 to gather support for the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Thousands attended the rally, and the U.S. Secret Service provided security alongside local law enforcement from the Phoenix and Scottsdale police departments.

The music world was thriving in 2016. Radiohead released “A Moon Shaped Pool,” Beyoncé returned with the triumphant “Lemonade” and David Bowie released his sendoff, “Blackstar.” The one record to outshine all others that year, however, was “Blonde” by Frank Ocean. It is no surprise that this album stands firm in the modern zeitgeist, despite approaching its 10th birthday in August. Ocean’s masterpiece debuted No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and remained on this list for 477 weeks as of March 2026.
