Jacksonville City Council member Matt Carlucci says he’ll try to persuade his fellow lawmakers to revive $4.9 million stripped from the mayor’s proposed city budget for an affordable housing trust fund. In a public meeting Tuesday at City Hall, Carlucci said he’s not asking council members to determine how the trust fund dollars are spent by the final budget vote Sept. 22.

Fat Tuesday, a former Jacksonville Landing tenant, has earned approval from City Council and the Planning Commission to open a bar and separate nightclub in Five Points. Jacksonville’s teachers union failed to meet a state deadline Tuesday afternoon to meet a membership threshold that would have allowed it to keep its certification. Instead, Duval Teachers United will now have to hold an election to earn its recertification — under a new state law will make that more difficult. This comes a week after the Duval County School Board, in a 4-3 vote, hired an attorney with a history of fighting against labor unions to represent the district.

A new task force will look into Clay County’s guardianship program to prosecute those who mismanage or steal from the children and older adults they’re supposed to care for. The guardianship task force will investigate possible abuse by professional or private caregivers, what Sheriff Michelle Cook called a “few bad actors” who were put in a position of trust, then failed.
