Weight Gain, Other Symptoms Not Inevitable
In the largest study to date, ZOE researchers find that menopause leads to significant changes in women’s metabolism — linked with excess weight and a higher risk of heart disease — along with greater sugar consumption and worse sleep. But it’s possible to counteract these changes through diet, improvements in gut health, and hormone replacement therapy. For many women, menopause comes with sleep problems, muscle loss, weight gain, and increased risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions.
COVID cases rocket to new high
According to ZOE COVID Study incidence figures, in total there are 258,155 currently new daily symptomatic cases of COVID in the UK on average. A massive increase of 47% from 175,189 reported last week (Graph 1). The UK R-value is estimated to be around 1.2 and regional R values are; England, 1.2, Wales, 1.2, Scotland, 1.1. In terms of prevalence, on average 1 in 24 people in the UK currently have symptomatic COVID. In the regions, England, 1 in 25. Wales, 1 in 33. Scotland, 1 in 21.

The Omicron variant: what does it mean for the future of COVID?
As most of us are now double or even triple vaccinated and life was starting to get back to normal at the end of 2021, there was a sign of cautious optimism that we were overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic. However, since the start of December, a new variant known as Omicron entered the scene and has now swept rapidly across the UK, not only taking over Delta as the dominant strain, but also leading to record high numbers of COVID infections due to its highly transmissible nature.
Omicron falling fast, but new uptick detected in children
According to ZOE COVID Study incidence figures, in total there are currently 144,527 new daily symptomatic cases of COVID in the UK on average, based on PCR and LF test data from up to three days ago [*]. A clear decrease of 21% from 183,364 reported last week (Graph 1). In the vaccinated population (at least two doses), there are currently 53,703 new daily symptomatic cases in the UK. An decrease of 36% from 83,699 new daily cases reported last week (Graph 2).
