Nonfiction Storytelling with Jon Ronson
Newsletter (Digital)
Hi, I tell narrative nonfiction stories, in books - Them, The Psychopath Test, So You've Been Publicly Shamed, Lost at Sea, The Men Who Stare At Goats, and podcasts - Things Fell Apart, The Debutante, The Butterfly Effect and The Last Days of August. When I'm not out having the adventures, I'm sitting here like a hermit monk, figuring out how to make stories work. For years I've been keeping notes about the nonfiction storytelling process, and I’m going to publish them here, as weekly posts. Also, this will be a place for all my work that won't be in a book or a podcast, just general Ronson things. Source

Hi, this is just a quick message to say that if you’re in New York, I’ll be doing the first ever Castle event at the BELL HOUSE in BROOKLYN on Sept 1, the day of the US publication. This won’t be like a regular reading. I’m bringing the book to life on stage, with audio and video clips, like a live, unfolding documentary. I still need to be cloak and dagger about where this story goes, although here is a little more about it.
The Castle is imminent
Hello! I have much news. I just got back from the cage fight at the White House. Only a tiny number of reporters got access to the South Lawn itself for fight night, and I was one of them. I wasn’t forced to watch it on a TV in the inauspicious basement of the nearby JW Marriott like the shut-outs were. I’m writing it up for GQ magazine. It was nuts. And funny.
THE CASTLE some big UK news
Hello! I am delighted to share this video unveiling the UK cover of THE CASTLE, which is available for preorder. I’ve been cloak and dagger about the story, because the twists and turns are really something, but the video includes some tiny slivers of audio from my reporting. I love the artwork and the video.
The Castle, my new book, is coming to the US on September 1
Hi all I'm delighted to let you know that my new book, THE CASTLE, is coming to the US on September 1 and is now available for preorder wherever you buy books. Through several unfolding stories, some of them quite hazardous and extraordinary, I piece together the reasons why I think many men have been unraveling in the 21st century.
The Castle, my new book. News.
Hi all, Sorry I haven’t been touch. I’ve been finishing my new book, my first in eleven years - The Castle. Anyway, it’s very done now. I’m being cloak-and-dagger about its story, but I like how this preview in The Shortlist described it: Anyway - UK people, it’s 25% off to preorder at Waterstones from now for three days, until midnight Friday night (Feb 20). Offer code FEB26. There’s an ad below to prove it. I’m touring a show based on the book in September / October.
I'm delighted to announce my new book
Dear Substack subscribers. Yes, I’ve been quiet. But it’s been for very good reason. THE CASTLE, my first book in eleven years, is available for preorder here now and the video explains more. Thank you! I really love this book and am very excited to get it out into the world.
The Death of Carol Howe
I learned some terrible news back on January 10th. It was about Carol Howe, the subject of my 2023 Audible show The Debutante. Before I tell you the news, here’s a little about her: She led many lives. She was a high society Tulsa debutante, then she joined an especially violent and unhinged white supremacist group, becoming their enthusiastic spokeswoman, then she turned undercover informant for the ATF. During her CI days she spied on some extremely dangerous people for the government.

Upcoming live events in New York and the UK
Hello! I wanted to let you know about some upcoming live events. First, I’ll be in conversation with Amanda Knox in Dumbo, Brooklyn, on March 26. Amanda is soon to publish a new book called Free about her reintegration into normal life after prison. There’s a story in there about a man called ‘Mike’ that’s so stunning, so tense and unexpected, my mouth literally hung open while I was listening. I’m going to ask her about that story A LOT. She wrote it very well.
I'm pausing payments again
Hello! During the past few weeks I’ve started to think of this Substack as a bit of a burden - mostly because of the people who very kindly pay. I very much want people to feel they’re getting their money’s worth with my work. So I’m going to KEEP POSTING - especially because I’ve got some stuff coming out soon that I’ll be very excited to tell you abou…
