From the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed …” At times, the U.S. has lived up to those lofty ideals and we have accomplished many great things during our history.

With the Fourth of July approaching rapidly, many Americans, including myself, have met a crossroad. On one hand, the state of our country is not admirable. On the other hand, who doesn’t love grilling hotdogs, blowing things up and watching beautiful fireworks light the sky.

When John Kyndt arrived at Bellevue University 13 years ago he was greeted by a less-than-inspiring science lab. His view? That was almost a brick wall of weeds, he says. Since then, he and others in the College of Science and Technology have been transforming not just the lab space but the 67-acre campus. Scotts Bluff County Tourism will celebrate America's Semiquincentennial with an extended celebration. The theme for Scotts Bluff County events will be "Our story began in the soil,' which Tourism Director Brenda Leisy told commissioners is aimed at honoring the agricultural roots of the community. Leisy outlined plans for the celebration activities during the June 29 commissioner meeting.

The Omaha Fire Department extinguished a working west Omaha house fire Thursday after the homeowner accidentally shot a firework into his garage, the Fire Department said. The Omaha Fire Department said it was dispatched around 9:50 p.m. Thursday to a home near South 132nd and Pacific Streets for a report of a house fire. When they arrived, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage of a single family wood frame house.

With the search for Omaha's next parks director still underway, Omaha Mayor John Ewing has named a new interim director for the city's sprawling park system. Jacquelyn Morrison will step into the position July 6.
