RIP William Orbit, who played a pivotal role in the development of British dance music in the 1990s, has died aged 69. His Instagram account posted a death notice today, reporting that he had died at home on July 23. Orbit is best known for producing Madonna’s massive, rave-slanted ‘Ray of Light’ single but was also highly influential through his early 90s act Bass-O-Matic, scored several hits including the anthemic ‘Fascinating Rhythm’.

Free by name… Much loved deep house producer, DJ and label boss Martin Iveson, better known as Atjazz, is in a reflective mood as he speaks to Juno Daily. “I used to produce hip-hop, trip hop and ambient music, lots of different stuff really, but then I heard a song called ‘Morning Factory’ by [legendary US deep house producers] Ron Trent and Chez Damier, and it literally changed my direction completely.

Tim Hecker and Steve Albini also feature Stars of the Lid‘s Adam Wiltzie has announced a collaborative album of “orchestral psychedelic drone compositions” recorded with the late Jóhann Jóhannsson. Deutsche Grammophon will release Friendship Survival Guide on September 18, which also features appearances by Tim Hecker and Steve Albini.
