With badges over their hearts and their hearts on their sleeves, English indie pop group Heavenly put out some of the most heartfelt albums of the 1990s. Now, they are back with “Highway to Heavenly”, their first LP in 30 years, an instant classic with an expansive tour that is now approaching its final leg on America’s West Coast. No longer the bushy-tailed popkids that they once were, Heavenly are now popadults. In the three decades since their last efforts together, they have loved and lost.

As the academic year comes to a close, a handful of us will be walking the stage at the Mustang Memorial Field. After any time spent at Cal Poly, it is bound to make us feel nostalgic and reflective of the years: making and losing friends, staying up late finishing a last-minute assignment and the person we became once we came out the other end of it all.

Cal Poly Short Cut “A Boy’s Dream” draws inspiration from the life journey of writer, editor and director Junior Rojas’ own father. The film follows 16-year-old José, who dreams of becoming a chef but faces cultural, familial and societal obstacles along the way. Working directly alongside Rojas was Makayla Pitts, the film’s cinematographer and co-producer. Mia Toralba served as sound technician and grip support, while Travis Royal took on the film’s lighting and assisted with grip.

A second wave of student made short films, or Short Cuts, will be hitting the Palm Theatre on June 8. Most scripts are born out of Cal Poly’s screenwriting class, ISLA 340. While the majority of films come from an array of personal moments, that isn’t the case for all of them. Psychology senior Adrianna Tokic took a more unconventional approach with her film “An Unwarranted Solution”.

Marley Logan is the content director for KCPR and the writer/director of “You Have the Sun.” This narrative follows her experience during the process of creating a film for Cal Poly’s spring Short Cuts showing. Following my freshman year at Cal Poly, I spent a warm San Diego summer working at my hometown waterpark (a resident employee of four years, seasonally).

With his high school prom approaching, the protagonist of Cal Poly student film “Run” finds himself stuck in a cycle of loneliness, anxiety and isolation. The quiet student longs for something more, but struggles to break free from the monotony of his everyday life. After a conversation shifts his perspective, he begins learning an important lesson: sometimes growth comes from running toward something, not away from it.

Despite police shutting down their May 15th house show, Cal Poly band Set in Stone said they still plan to continue playing live shows. The band formed during move-in week after freshman bass player Matt Jarman met his future bandmates through mutual friends and Greek life. After connecting over music and practicing in parking garages around campus, the group started playing live shows around San Luis Obispo. For Jarman, house shows offer something larger venues cannot always recreate.

Sitting behind the front counter filled with miscellaneous items, Eddie Frawley exists as he did once before — a young boy in his dad’s pawn shop. He grew up as a music lover and channeled his early experience in customer service to create a music store of his own.
