MANDY MILES/Keys Weekly The Florida Keys’ elections supervisor announced this week that results of the Aug. 18 election will be delayed until about 10 p.m. due to the removal of landlines from all 33 polling places in the island chain.

And just like that, summer break is over. Aug. 12 marked the return of students to the classroom and the arrival of new teachers and staff at Upper Keys schools. Amid the hustle and bustle before the first bell rang, teachers took a moment from the classroom prep and instructional plans to speak with the Upper Keys Weekly about their teaching styles, hobbies and more. As kids hit the hallways on Aug. 12, they’re not the only ones getting used to their new classrooms. There are four new faces on the teaching staff at MMHS this year – including a new assistant principal – and the Keys Weekly is proud to introduce them to our community. MHS exceptional student education (ESE) Where did you get your degree? Cabrini College in Radnor, Pennsylvania. How long have you lived in the Keys? One month – we just moved here this summer. How would you describe your teaching style?

The Last Mango Cruise was created to promote the 1985 release of Jimmy Buffett’s ‘Last Mango in Paris’ album. I discovered that in 1985 on Ballast Key, a private island owned by Key West’s beloved “gentleman developer” David Wolkowsky, during a Jimmy Buffett extravaganza called the Last Mango Cruise. The cruise concept was simple … theoretically.

‘Occupational Hazard: The First Coral Reefers’ is a 90-minute documentary about the early days of Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers Band in Key West and on tour. It was the late 1920s when an open-air roadster rambled away from Miami, through Homestead and over the Card Sound Bridge. Two men occupied the vehicle. After the bridge, the car rolled over State Road 4A, the original path of the Overseas Highway, and down Key Largo. While still traveling across North Key Largo, the roadster came to a stop at a roadside motel and restaurant called the Key Inn.

And by scream I mean make a noise that sounds a lot like stepping, full-footed, in the dark, on a dog’s squeaky toy, during a late-night, bleary-eyed trip to the bathroom.
