KMFA FM 89.5 is an Austin, Texas non-profit, listener-supported radio station playing classical music and licensed in Austin, Texas with an effective radiated power of 40,000 watts. It is currently under ownership of Capitol Broadcasting Association. The broadcast schedule consists of playlists announced by local hosts, as well as nationally syndicated broadcasts, including those from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera during its season, and the Radio Netherlands Live! at the Concertgebouw series. On the weekends, the NPR program From the Top, showcasing young classical musicians, is heard on KMFA, as well as a program of classical music from the School of Music at the University of Texas-Austin. During the overnight hours (generally 10 PM to 6 AM), the Music Through the Night service from Public Radio International is heard. Source

KMFA's Offbeat Series begins with BORDERLAND
KMFA CLASSICAL PRESENTS Presented by Estes Audiology KMFA Classical’s Offbeat Serieswill offer a full lineup of in-person contemporary classical works in the Draylen Mason Music Studio at KMFA (41 Navasota Street, Austin, 78702) in 2023. Spring concerts to include Panoramic Voices presenting BORDERLAND on February 18, which will activate the entire KMFA building, and CLOSE TO HOME with Daniel Fears on April 8. Tickets are on sale now for the February and April events.

The Gold Standard Even though composer William Grant Still wrote nearly 200 compositions, many of not most of them have never been recorded. That changed with the new album “William Grant Still” performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on the Naxos label. Conductor Avlana Eisenberg was encouraged to record this album by her mother, a violinist. His granddaughter Celeste Headlee provided some insight into Still's struggle.

VIRGINIA ALVAREZ TO BECOME DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT FOR KMFA CLASSICAL 89.5 IN OCTOBER 2022 David Hammond moves to Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre KMFA Classical 89.5 announces that Virginia Alvarez has been appointed its new Director of Development, effective October 13, 2022. Alvarez has been Director of Individual Giving at KMFA since 2016. She will succeed David Hammond, who after ten years at KMFA has accepted the position of Director of Development at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

New Music USA Encouraging Orchestral Collaborations New Music USA, a group advocating for new music discoveries in the United States is upping the ante for the nation’s orchestras. Their program, Amplifying Voices, has 30 orchestras collaborating to co-commission works by 9 composers of color. Two of them are in Texas. Vanessa Reed, the President and CEO of New Music USA says they’re trying to expand the canon of classical music.
