SEATTLE (AP) — Backup quarterback Drew Lock led two late scoring drives and the Seattle Seahawks intercepted Drake Maye three times in the fourth quarter to overcome an early injury to starter Sam Darnold and beat the New England Patriots 13-10 on Wednesday night in a Super Bowl rematch. The Seahawks were held to just a field goal through three quarters as Lock and the offense struggled to move the ball after Darnold injured his hip on the opening drive.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A fire broke out on a passenger ferry in waters off the western Philippines, leaving dozens of people missing, the coast guard said Thursday. At least five people were killed. So far, 42 people have been rescued and efforts are ongoing, so the count of 87 people missing may change, coast guard spokeswoman Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said in a radio interview.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold suffered a hip injury on Seattle's first series of the NFL season opener against the New England Patriots on Wednesday night. Darnold was sacked by Dre'Mont Jones and limped off the field. He was examined in the sideline medical tent, then limped to the locker room. The Seahawks said Darnold's return was questionable. Backup Drew Lock replaced him. Darnold led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl title last season.

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Barry Melrose, a hockey player-turned-coach who led the Los Angeles Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final before going on to a long career in broadcasting the sport, has died. He was 70. ESPN announced Melrose’s death Wednesday after his wife informed the network. Melrose stepped away from the role in 2023 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani was out of the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup for sixth time in seven games on Wednesday night after the two-way superstar felt something in his right arm during a swing two days earlier. Ohtani has been managing lingering soreness in his right biceps and left knee for weeks now, but he waited until after Tuesday night's game to tell the training staff about his arm after playing Monday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Karen Khachanov was prepared to go through a tough test to get back to the U.S. Open semifinals. Alexander Blockx's body wasn't up for one. Blockx stopped playing in the third set Wednesday because of injuries to his leg, ribs and back, sending Khachanov to his third Grand Slam semifinal. “I think my body just gave up,” Blockx said.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Southeastern Conference is no longer expected to vote on whether to expel LSU from the league on Thursday, a person familiar with the matter said Wednesday evening.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve doubled in the third inning against Philadelphia on Wednesday night for his 2,500th career hit. The 36-year-old Altuve reached the milestone with a hit to center field against Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez, becoming the second player in franchise history to reach 2,500 hits. Hall of Famer Craig Biggio is Houston’s all-time leader with 3,060 hits. Altuve was hitless in Tuesday’s series opener against the Phillies.
