There’s a 97% chance this year’s El Niño will spill over into next year, lasting until spring 2027, the Climate Prediction Center said Thursday. There’s an 81% chance it will grow to be “very strong” by its peak in the early winter. Very strong El Niños, also called “super” El Niños, are rare.
Kansas zoo mourns following sudden death of patriarchal chimp
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Kansas zoo is mourning the sudden loss of one of its most beloved residents. The Rolling Hills Zoo announced Saturday the death of longtime resident Shudak. He was found Friday morning, having died sometime in the night. The elder chimpanzee was born on March 21, 1978, and had spent the first years of his life as a research subject at the Primate Foundation of Arizona. He arrived at the Rolling Hills Zoo in 1997 at the age of 19.
Standard time could become permanent in US under new bill, with some exceptions
(NEXSTAR) – A new bill introduced in Congress could drastically change how we observe the twice-a-year practice of changing the clocks, even as a move to make daylight saving time permanent gains traction. For the last few years, there have been several attempts to make daylight saving time — the time we are currently observing — permanent. The Sunshine Protection Act passed through the Senate in 2022, but subsequent versions of the legislation haven’t been as lucky.
1 dead after ICE-involved shooting in Maine
(NewsNation) – One person is dead after a shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on Monday morning in Maine, Nexstar’s NewsNation has confirmed. The shooting happened around 7:20 a.m. local time in Biddeford, located about 15 miles south of Portland and 90 miles north of Boston. Federal immigration officials have not released any details about what led to the fatal shooting. The FBI was on the scene of the shooting along with the Maine State Police.

Blood supplies critically low, American Red Cross warns
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The American Red Cross is warning that blood supplies are getting critically low. The organization said Monday that a steep decline in blood donations since the end of May created a growing gap between supply and patients in need. The Red Cross says that hospital demand for blood is nearly 3,500 units higher per week than expected, with the summer season being one of the peak times of the year for traumatic injuries to happen.
