ABILENE, Texas — A longtime tradition returned to Abilene on Saturday morning as the Hillcrest Neighborhood Fourth of July Parade marked its 30th annual event, drawing families and neighbors together for a celebration of community and history, followed by an ice cream social hosted by the Hillcrest Church of Christ. The parade was followed by an ice cream social (KTXS/Briannagh Dennehy). Involvement Minister Alan Clute reflected on how the event began and what it represents today.

Edwin Hammond marked a milestone birthday on July 4, celebrating 104 years of life. Born July 4, 1922, Hammond said his advice for a long life is simple: “Stop smoking; keep up exercise; it’s good for you; sometimes a little fireball don’t hurt.” His eldest daughter, Nancy Shaw, said Hammond was born and raised in the Capital Region and left in 1939 to serve in World War II. “I think he might have been 17 when he enlisted after his friend did. My grandmother was supposedly not happy,” Shaw said.
