On July 17, 1982, Stevie Ray Vaughan played the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the first time an unsigned act performed at the prestigious festival’s main stage. Montreux, on the banks of Lake Geneva, showcased the world’s best jazz performers, but it also programmed a blues night for European fans of the genre. Still, it wasn’t an obvious move for Stevie Ray Vaughan.

The blues-meets-slacker rock musician’s tenth studio album, Philadelphia’s Been Good To Me, is his “bringin it home to Philly” album, largely recorded in his home studio there and his first release following the death of longtime collaborator and former Swirlies bandmate Rob Laakso. The tour stops in Austin tonight with demented indie rockers Being Dead opening.

When you spin jams from Suit Yourself by KUTX Artist of the Month alum Je’Texas, like “No Vacancy” or “The Woman I Love”, you realize that these originals would be right at home with a lot of ’60s music collections. Songwriter/vocalist Dylan Bishop draws from a lot of the old-school influences his dad shared with him, including classic blues.
