1941 – 2026 Bev passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the Lacombe Hospital and Health Care Centre on Monday, August 3, 2026, at the age of 85 years. Bev was born on May 4, 1941, in Coronation, AB, and moved to the Blackfalds area with her mom Dorothy Miller (Homan) and dad Jack Miller in the mid 1950’s. She graduated from Lacombe High School in 1959, where she was a star basketball player with her friends Sylvia Corkery (nee Gustafson) and Pat Wright (nee Miller).

Bilateral federal-provincial agreements are coming to an end in 2027, putting funding for mental health programs in the provinces and territories at risk. In 2017, the federal government established an $11-billion bilateral health agreement with the provinces, with the money to be directed to mental health, addictions and home care.

Two suspects in an Ontario homicide have had their charges upgraded to first-degree murder and the two are still on the run. Ontario Provincial Police announced the upgraded charges against Ottawa men, 34-year-old Joseph Madore and 28-year-old Brayton Kennedy, on Thursday (Sept. 3). They were both previously facing second-degree murder charges previously. Both have warrants for their arrest. Police are also still warning that Madore and Kennedy remain at large.

Thanks to a combination of satellite imagery, observations from small aircraft and reports from boaters, BC Hydro says the mystery of a disappearing island has been solved. The floating island on Williston Reservoir, near Mackenzie, became one of Canada’s “most famous islands,” BC Hydro said after news stories – nationally and internationally – of it mysteriously appearing near Finlay Bay and then seemingly vanishing.

The Western Hockey League (WHL) will be temporarily available to be streamed for free on YouTube following “uncertainty” with the league’s now former media partner, Victory+. Lacombe baseball player Kendal Switzer helped Alberta capture gold at the Western Canadian Championships in August. Switzer competed on the Team Alberta 14U girls’ baseball team. Alberta secured gold with a 14-9 win in the final over Team BC. Switzer, who regularly plays for the Dodgers, enjoyed representing Lacombe and Alberta at the championships held in Île des Chênes, Manitoba. “This was my second year on Team Alberta.

Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is applauding a federal gas tax cut extension and urging the prime minister to make it permanent. The federal government temporarily suspended its 10-cents-per-litre gas tax and four-cent-per-litre excise tax on diesel in April. The taxes were scheduled to return on Sept. 8, but federal Finance and National Revenue Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced further tax relief on Sept. 2.
