Dogs forced to fight or mistreated in breeding operations are at the center of a federal enforcement push that includes a new Animal Protection Bureau, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced. The bureau brings together specialists to coordinate investigations and assess whether facilities follow animal-care requirements. Working with inspectors, veterinarians, and legal partners, the team helps identify unlicensed operations and improve inspections nationwide.

Compassionate animal advocates recently gathered in Washington, D.C., and Chicago to call for stronger animal protections in China — which lacks a national anti-cruelty law for companion animals — following the horrific killings of a stray mother dog named Wang Wang and her puppies. Organized by Lady Freethinker, the peaceful event took place on Sept. 24 during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the White House.

A brown pelican tangled in fishing line showed up at exactly the right door. The bird walked up to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries laboratory in Panama City, Florida, and repeatedly tapped their beak against the glass entrance. Just 10 minutes later, the injured animal was free and back in the sky.

At Lady Freethinker, we care deeply about animals and are grateful to share this planet with them. We respect them for who they are, and believe every life matters. We want all animals to be seen, respected, and valued for the individuals they are because the way we see animals shapes how we treat them – and, ultimately, the kind of world they experience. So this World Animal Day, we want to celebrate animals and all that they bring to our lives.

Wild African elephants in Kenya may know which plants to seek out when they feel sick — and mothers may even prepare plant medicine for their calves, according to a new study shaped by Indigenous knowledge. Researchers spoke with eight experts from the Sabaot Indigenous community in the Mount Elgon region, including wildlife scouts, elders, guides, and a retired ranger. Each had observed the area’s elephants for more than 20 years and knew the community’s traditional plant medicines.
