Anti-Black racism is an undercurrent in American society, a pervasive ideology flowing in the opposite direction of the values our nation purports to hold near and dear, like equality, liberty, and progress. Too often, pervasive stereotypes about Black criminality contribute to a shoot-first-ask-questions-later type of environment that endangers Black lives. And this is not an ideology limited to white people.

He said Lincoln. The record says otherwise. On August 27, 2020, Donald Trump stood on the South Lawn of the White House, accepting the Republican presidential nomination, and said this: “I say very modestly that I have done more for the African American community than any president since Abraham Lincoln, our first Republican president.” Very modestly. That is not a campaign boast a reasonable person can wave off. It is a specific historical claim, which means it can be tested.

Jay-Z popped out at the Roots Picnic this weekend with a freshly combed out fro and the internet blew a gasket. Perhaps I was way too ignorant about the widespread natural hair ignorance, but I was truly blown away by how misinformed people are as it related to locked hair. Let’s comb through it! The main claim I’m seeing involving Jay-Z’s hair makeover is that he’s wearing a wig. And not just that his afro is a wig, but his locs were a wig as well.

I sat in a diner outside Austell, Georgia, the year before last summer. Cracked vinyl booths. A 2024 sticker was curling off the napkin dispenser. The waitress called every man honey. Two booths over, an older couple started arguing about the school board, and when the husband said something about “those people,” the wife shushed him fast, because the cook and I were Black and standing six feet away. The whole exchange lasted maybe four seconds.

The premise of the Juneteenth holiday is to celebrate the date when enslaved people in Texas were informed of their freedom. On June 19, 1865, seventy-one days after the Civil War ended, Major General Gordon Granger rolled into Galveston, TX, with his army and announced that slavery was over. His announcement wasn’t based on the South losing the war, but the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed Texas’s enslaved people, provided they made their way to a free state or territory.

Meet Keith Kidwell, a Republican member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 79 since 2019, after the district was created during mid‑cycle redistricting. First, a few companies asked (very nicely) for their employees to come in one day a week. Work from home folks, like me, thought to themselves: Well, okay. One day a week is cool. You don’t need a poll to tell you the economy feels bad. You feel it every time you gas up, every rent notice, every grocery run where the total jumps before your cart is even half full. For a lot of Americans, especially the folks who took a chance on Donald Trump because he promised them a “great economy,” that feeling has turned into something else: the sense that they got conned. Over the last few months, that gut check has started to show up in the numbers.
