Welcome to our weekend conversation! Happy July 4th weekend, everyone! As you know, I’m not currently in the U.S. But I saw some sparkly shadows flittering across the sky this morning, and I swear they are the celebratory echoes of my fellow countrypeople. Salut, mes amis! This weekend, naturally, I’m thinking about independence. What does it mean? What is it in the literary context? How do we claim it as writers, artists, makers of magazines and publishers?

Welcome to our weekly column offering perspectives on lit mag publishing, with contributions from readers, writers and editors around the world. The creative process is different for everyone. My own often starts with chaos that swirls until it settles into a poem, a prose piece, a photographic picture book for young readers—this essay. I embrace that chaos, but by the time I’m ready to submit a polished poem or book proposal to a publisher, I need to take a different approach. A business attitude.

Hi everyone! Hope you’re having a great start to your week! I just wanted to share a few bits of info, offers, and itineraries. First, our final meeting for the Lit Mag Reading Club will be this August. We will be reading Epiphany and at the end of August we’ll have Editor Sara Lippmann in to discuss the magazine. (They recently did a redesign, and their new site looks gorgeous.) The editors have kindly offered a 20% discount on a print or digital issue for members of the Lit Mag Reading Club.

First published in 1975, we are one of the oldest literary magazines run by graduate students in the country.
