Where indeed is the gravitas these days? In America that quality seems to be diminishing rapidly, rather like the alpine glaciers in Europe. Too many, including in America’s media, are quite simply growing ever more vacuous, even cloddish in their judgments (and in how they deliver those judgments). They don’t always weigh different elements, and take account of stubborn little things called facts.
Tyler Spielman, Jazy Roberts win rain-shortened 67th Porter Cup in dominant fashion
Jay Sigel. Phil Mickelson. David Duval. All of them won the Porter Cup. None of them shot lower than Tyler Spielman. Spielman walked off the course after 56 holes Friday fully expecting to go back out on Saturday for another 18 to secure his victory. In the wake of America’s celebrating its 250th birthday, when we were busy with fireworks, picnics and family gatherings, it’s a good time to solemnly ponder the growing chasm between the left and the right, and to think about a way to bridge the gap. Several columnists have put their own special spins on this situation, from various standpoints.

Council to consider scheduling Bewley rezoning vote as questions remain
With a resolution on the Common Council’s agenda to schedule a vote to rezone the Bewley Building’s parking lot at its next meeting, Kevin Kirchberger, alderman-at-large, questioned whether the rezoning would be needed for every type of future development for the building. Last week, Kathryn Fogle, 4th Ward alderman, submitted a resolution to authorize the drafting of a local law to amend the city’s zoning code and provide notice of a public hearing.
