Happy Thanksgiving Folks! I recently read an inspirational post that said we should remember to appreciate the little things in life… like finding a jar of fudge that we had forgotten about… or finding a rock that looks like a heart …or getting a surprise post card from an old friend. They may not be big, like getting approved for a car loan, or being promoted. But a bunch of those little things can offset some big thing that knocks you off your feet, and gets you through that bad day.

Strolling down the pavement I hear the crackling of leaves beneath my soles and feel the glide of thin iridescent glaze. The turquois skies steeple above while the wooly white puffs present their exclusive glory. A delightful crest of frozen snow here and an emerald patch of green grass there. An unadorned tree welcomes me with her gentle wave, while others compete for my attention with their vibrant shades. Noble spruce protects the unfruitful for it is their chapter to triumph.

Ever wonder about the white, wood signs along Highway 7, that don’t seem to make sense as to number of miles? Here is your answer: Drew Leino says: They are the “original” mile marker posts. They will not match the “new” signs which were placed when the road was realigned. Some of the pull offs along the river (that remain after the flood) were the original road, as is the old Hwy. 7 that goes off to the left as you just leave Lyons, and the road along Riverside and Raymond.

National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated in November each year to recognize the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous people. Boulder is rich in this history, with evidence of inhabitation going back 13,000 years. There are many sites in the County that have special meaning to the tribes including the following: Boulder Creek, right in the civic center of downtown Boulder.

As families, loved ones, and friends across the country come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us be grateful for all the blessings of this Nation and its limitless possibilities. Throughout our country’s history, this season of reflection and giving thanks comes in good times and tough ones. Before there was a United States of America, the Pilgrims celebrated Thanksgiving in honor of their first successful harvest and the support and generosity of the Wampanoag people who made it possible.

The Carnegie Library, 1125 Pine St., Boulder, contains thousands of Boulder County’s historic documents, including maps, photos, newspaper clippings, yearbooks and property records. This includes many items that are connected to the town of Lyons, such as oral histories and photographs. The Carnegie Library went through hard times a few years ago, when the city of Boulder wanted to drastically cut financing to its public library system.

Lyons, CO …. On Sunday, November 10, 2024, the Lyons Community Foundation (LCF) held its annual Grantee Reception at the Lyons Farmette. This gathering celebrated the community’s dedication to local projects that contribute to the vibrancy and resilience of Lyons.

I am delighted to have gotten the Lyons Community Orchard up and going this year. It’s been a pleasure partnering with the Lyons Community Farm Project. The orchard started off with 28 trees consisting of peach, plum, cherry, nectarine, pear and apple. Different varieties of each type of fruit so that each one will have a different flavor and different ripening time so that someday we will hopefully get non stop fruit from mid June through early October.

Rocky Mountain Botanic Gardens continues to fill in with more variety and vibrant color. We planted 920 plants this year, from 8 different nurseries. We’ve been planting now for 4-1/2 years, and many of the older shrubs and trees have grown enough to require larger deer-proof cages around them. We still have three volunteer days each week ~~ Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, from 9 to 11 am, from April to October. So far this year volunteers have worked 1100 hours in the garden.
