For 27 years, Hicham El Guerrouj's world record looked untouchable. On Saturday at the London Diamond League, Josh Kerr finally brought it down. The reigning world champion ran a blistering 3:42.66 to win the men's mile, breaking the legendary mark of 3:43.13 set by two-time Olympic champion Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999. When the gun goes off at London Stadium, the Olympic silver medalist wants to hear the roar of the crowd, filled with fans from his home country, go silent with anticipation. When he glides around the turn into the homestretch, Kerr wants to hear competitors' spikes hit the track.
