EDITOR'S NOTE: The following article is based heavily on one written for MileSplit in 2017 by contributor Nico Composto. We've added a bit of additional guidance to it in the hopes that any frustrated runner dealing with IT band pain will be able to continue to train intelligently through it, while treating underlying causes of the pain. If you're reading this, you're presumably dealing with the dreaded condition known as IT band syndrome.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This 2017 article has been updated to more accurately reflect the state of distance training in 2026 - namely, that we've gone through a threshold-based revolution. Tempo runs are still important and popular, but we wanted to draw more of a distinction between how the terms "tempo" and "threshold" tend to be used. Tempo runs should be a staple for runners of every distance from the 1500m to the marathon.
