The City of Moab will host a community open house on Wednesday, Sept. 16 to share information and gather input on the upcoming proposed renovations of the Center Street Ballpark. The event will follow a drop-in format, allowing attendees to arrive at any time during the two-hour window.

This is that sumptuous time of year when I revel in the astounding sounds of the Moab Music Festival. Now in its 34th year, the festival continues to bring world-class delights to our community in settings from historic Star Hall to the banks of the Colorado River and adjoining desert-scapes. This year’s menu has not disappointed.

It was recently reported that Grand County Commissioner Bill Winfield called Commissioner Jacques Hadler the “bike master” and that it might have been meant as a slight. Having gazed enviously upon Jacque’s extensive personal and family bike collection, I can attest to the fact that he is indeed a Bike Master and that the term should be construed as a compliment. Apropos of nothing, Eddy Merckx of Belgium has hundreds of bike race wins under his belt.

When Wendell Berry, 92, died Monday, Aug. 31, the West lost a writer who focused on the importance of rural land. He studied under the writer Wallace Stegner at Stanford University and wrote nine novels about characters — some like himself — who farmed and cared about the land. What also stood out about him was his public leadership — his readiness to march and commit civil disobedience, protesting against national, state and local government when he found their policies harmful and short-sighted.

The dog days of summer took on a whole new meaning for people in Castle Valley last month. Many Castle Valley folks spent part of their summer days and evenings cruising the town’s dusty roads in search of Jackie Chan. It wasn’t the well-known Hong Kong martial artist and actor they were searching for, but rather a little seven-pound Chinese Crested hairless Chihuahua mix who escaped his enclosure on Shafer Lane on Aug. 15.

That is why I am inviting all Grand County residents to follow along with our upcoming county budget process. Dear Mr. Labant, as you point out in your recent letter, [“Deal with it,” The Times-Independent, Aug. 27] in which you point out the voters picked the current commissioners and we should “deal with it.” Grand County Commissioner Trish Hedin You’re correct; voters did pick the current commissioners, including Mary McGann, three times; Jacques Hadler, twice; and myself, also twice.
