Believe it or not, there were plenty of people on the internet who made those claims this week, in the wake of Sunday's record high of 109 degrees at Salt Lake City International Airport. While readings have been taken at the airport for at least 85 years, some believe that the process has become biased, pushing reported temperatures up and setting undeserved record highs — including Sunday's.

The Salt Lake City Council recently voted to increase property taxes in the city by 12.5%, which will raise about $13.5 million for the city’s tight budget. It’s not quite official yet — Utah’s truth-in-taxation laws mean the raise is still subject to another public hearing — but it looks likely to go through. Furthermore, some council members have hinted that additional increases might be necessary in the years ahead. Salt Lake County has proposed raising its share of property taxes, too.
