Even before MTG’s Head Designer teased new Dwarf support, the themes of The Hobbit set were obvious. With the story built upon Treasure and a Dwarf-filled adventuring party, these elements were bound to be translated to MTG. Wizards didn’t disappoint in doing this, either, as the set contained plenty of fantastic new cards and Commanders. As usual, as MTG players have built around these new toys, we’ve unsurprisingly seen a range of price spikes.

Since the most recent ban announcement hit three Standard all-stars, the format’s metagame has experienced some major shifts. Players have quickly begun finding success with forgotten and revamped archetypes that are finally seeing the light of day. A sweet Naya Delirium shell, for example, has been making the rounds in Magic Online Leagues and Challenges.

Due to Magic’s relentless release schedule, players rarely have enough time to properly consider a new set’s Commanders nowadays. This isn’t exactly a new problem, too, as some extremely powerful Commanders from a few years ago have seemingly been totally overlooked. This is a crying shame for Commanders like Torsten, Founder of Benalia, which see remarkably little play despite their power.

Though they’re often seen as one of the more mundane elements of the game, especially by new players, lands are arguably the most important cards in all of Magic. Not only do they give you the mana necessary to actually play the game, but they often come with helpful, sometimes format-defining, bonuses on top. With over 1,200 lands in MTG today, whittling them down to the very best is no mean feat.

Despite being surrounded by a couple of short-lived controversies, Mystery Booster: Commander Edition looks like a true love letter to MTG players. Not only are there tons of deep lore cuts across the 60 new cards, but many of them are seriously strong too. Some, like Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero, in fact, are in contention for being the best-in-slot option for some archetypes.

Despite initial expectations that The Hobbit was underpowered, the set has been consistently proving itself since its release. Not only have some new cards managed to put up strong results, but the set’s Commanders have proven to be a hoot, too. While this has already been enough to cause a range of price spikes, multiple competitive formats are thriving, further boosting demand. Thanks to these avenues combined, there’s been a lot of interest in Tyvar, the Pummeler, recently.

When it comes to Dragon Typal decks, the best Dragon is so powerful that playing anything else seems silly. Thanks to this, cards like Scion of the Ur-Dragon often get relegated to the 99 as a supporting piece. That said, despite not being a Dragon Typal deck, the power of this underrated Dragon has been unlocked thanks to a Secrets of Strixhaven card that unlocks an insane combo kill.

Over the years, many archetypes have emerged that create unfun play patterns. Still, Lantern Control in Modern remains the most infamous of the bunch, completely shutting down opposing gameplans while stalling to victory. While this deck hasn’t received many tools in recent sets and has thus seen its metagame presence fade, it just came back with a vengeance to win a Magic Online Modern Challenge.

Throughout 2026, plenty of new cards have quickly proven to be shockingly expensive. Between the multiformat bombs and Commander staples, there’s plenty of gems to pull from packs. As expensive as these default-frame MTG cards are, however, they’re nothing compared to the chase cards released in 2026. Exclusively found in Collector Boosters, getting your hands on these chase cards certainly isn’t easy. That being said, if you do get lucky, there’s obscene potential for value.

Since its introduction back in 1994, the Legend rule has, in one way or another, kept Magic’s legendary creatures in check. A few sneaky MTG cards, like Cadric, Soul Kindler, let you circumvent this rule, however, to devastating effect. With a ton of potential for value plays and terrifying combos, this Dwarf Wizard is a fantastic underrated Commander option. The bulk of Cadric’s power comes from its ability to copy your legendary permanents, for a cheap rate, whenever they enter play.
