Halifax man accused of threatening to bomb U.S. Consulate not ready to pursue bail
The lawyer for a man accused of threatening to bomb the U.S. Consulate in Halifax earlier this month says his client is not ready to seek bail. Ali Assakereh was arrested on Aug. 10 for allegedly placing a propane tank and flammable liquids in his car and parking near the consulate, shutting down a section of downtown Halifax. The 54-year-old is facing several charges, including an offence that deals with threats against internationally protected people that's considered terrorist activity.
No Canadians among 121 foreign nationals found in Nepal after flash flooding
No Canadians are among the 121 foreign nationals rescued near the Nepal-China border after a flash flood tore through the region on Wednesday. The flash flooding along the Himalayan border between Nepal and China, caused by a glacial collapse, has killed at least 570 people. Nepal’s disaster management authority said the number of people reported missing has doubled to 1,924. The Nepal tourism board website listed 667 foreign nationals among the missing on Thursday, including 25 Canadians.
Wildfire near Summerland, B.C., that forced thousands to evacuate being held
The wildfire that forced thousands to flee their homes in British Columbia's South Okanagan region earlier this month is now classified as being held. The BC Wildfire Service says the blaze is expected to remain within its current perimeter of about 252 square kilometres west of Summerland. It's also no longer classified as a wildfire-of-note, leaving two such fires in the province — one near Boston Bar and another near Clinton.
