Reading is valuable both for self-education and for occupying time which would otherwise be used for idleness or vice. In light of the president’s remarks on Canadian annexation, the April 2025 Canadian parliamentary election, the revival of two Canadian provincial separatist movements, and the ongoing self-delegitimization of the Canadian state; I took it upon myself to use much of my free time to learn about Canada.
Greenland
“We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security” United States President Donald J. Trump in a 4 May 2025 interview In the beginning, as in so many other human beginnings, it was cold in Greenland. Indeed, so cold that the entirety of Greenland had been buried beneath a great ice sheet since before Man spread out Africa.

Story of the Slavs
From the early Indo-Europeans to the Soviet Union What stirs you, voices from far away? Why do you threaten Russia with curses? What outrages you? The strife in Lithuania? Ignore it - it is strife between Slavs It is an old, domestic strife already set by fate It is a question which you cannot resolve Among each other have long struggled the tribes More than once one bent in a storm Sometimes us, other times others Who will endure in this unequal strife? The proud Pole, or the true Russian?
Germania
The people of Germany appear to me indigenous, and free from intermixture with foreigners, either as settlers or casual visitants. For the emigrants of former ages performed their expeditions not by land, but by water; and that immense, and, if I may so call it, hostile ocean, is rarely navigated by ships from our world.
On the Historical Unity of Americans and Canadians
“Canadians have relatively few binding national myths, but one of the most pervasive and enduring is the conviction that the country is doomed” – Andrew Potter Looking from the year 2025, Canada appears to be a fluke of history. Her prime minister declared her to be a post-national state. Most of her provinces trade more with the United States than they do with the rest of Canada.

The Sons of Chad
Along the Chari River in southern Chad, there are two villages named Gori and Damtar. They are 10 kilometers from each other, and are on opposite sides of the river. To an ignorant outsider, the people of these two villages appear to be the same as their neighbors. The Laal people who live in those villages speak their own language, which has no relation to any other language in the world. The languages of their neighbors are parts of considerably more widespread language families.
Seven Ages of Western Eurasia
In the beginning, it was cold. Glaciers covered most of North America and a large part of northern Europe and Russia. Sea levels were 120 meters lower than today, leaving vast expanses of now-drowned lands open to terrestrial life. The Sahara Desert was even vaster then than in the present. Most of mankind lived in coastal or riparian lowlands around the world, taking advantage of the nutritional wealth that flowed to them from the water.
The Indo-European Conquests
Rajah. Rex. Reich. Ruler. Similar words relating to a position of power or an area where such a position’s power is exercised. Oddly, those words are from languages spoken quite far from each other in time and place. Rex was the title of the kings of Rome prior to the rise of the Republic. Rajah was a title in India for centuries, Reich the German word for realm, and ruler an English word.
