Baxter, an ex-army corporal, had pleaded not guilty to murdering his son, by shaking or striking him on November 3, 2011. The jury of eight women and four men found him not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter. They took 11 hours of deliberations before reaching the verdict in Townsville Supreme Court. Baxter was supported by his wife Tenae, her family and his extended family during the lengthy six-week trial. Ms Baxter gasped, said “No, no, no” then cried after the verdict was read out.
