OGDENSBURG — Minimum staffing is once again at the forefront of a disagreement between the city of Ogdensburg and the Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters Local 1799. On Wednesday afternoon, the city announced in a press release that when two firefighters, out of a six-man shift, are on vacation at the same time, it would no longer bring in firefighters on overtime to fill the vacancies, saving the city on overtime costs.

TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake Free Press (Franklin County) and Gouverneur Tribune Press (St. Lawrence County) have been sold to Gazette News Group, a Schenectady-based news company that has been growing its reach in the Adirondacks in recent years. The sale was finalized this week and the first edition of both papers under the new ownership is on stands now. Gazette purchased the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Lake Placid News in March.

CANTON — A long-vacant property on West Main Street has been redeveloped into a $2.34 million craft brewery and taproom with the opening of Bent Beam Brewing. Empire State Development announced the grand opening of the brewery at 41 W. Main St. The project received $610,000 through the state’s Restore New York Communities Initiative and Regional Council Capital Fund.

MALONE — An inmate who was formerly at Upstate Correctional Facility pled guilty to murder in the first degree, this week. Andrew Hernandez, 42, pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder, a “Class A-I” violent felony, in Franklin County Court. He is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 19, according to a prepared statement from Franklin County District Attorney Elizabeth M. Crawford. Hernandez strangled his cellmate, Michael J.

POTSDAM — State police charged Tabitha M. Martin, 49, Nicholville, on Tuesday with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop on the Austin Ridge Road in the town of Potsdam. During the traffic stop at 11:05 a.m., Martin exhibited suspicious behavior, according to troopers. The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office responded with a K9, which alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.

RUSSELL — On Sunday, state police charged Natalie L. Miller, 24; Karen L. Strothman, 45; and Arthur W. Strothman, 42, all of Gouverneur, with second-degree criminal trespass following an investigation into a burglary on County Route 25 in the town of Russell on Saturday.

Titan Mining Corp., owners of the Empire State Mines in Fowler, are moving forward with their plans to christen the United States’ only graphite mine. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has opened the public comment for a permit the mine needs to dig. Empire State Mines has operated a zinc mine at its St. Lawrence County facility since 2017, pulling up about 64 million pounds of the mineral per year. But in 2024, they discovered a vein of graphite while looking for more zinc.
