Overlode is coming to an end. At the back end of 2020, three creative people decided that it would be a fun idea to start an independent website about video games. We were not the first to do this, and we certainly won’t be the last, but we felt as though our motivations went beyond just having something to say. We wanted to give other people like us a platform to say those things too.
Brushing off the game’s horror mechanics may still happen however, in fact I’ve seen it happen already. Watching streamers and YouTubers play it intensely (like this 2 minute speedrun from ZubatLEL), I’m noticing experienced Dead By Daylight survivor players skip the vast majority of the game’s noise-making QTEs, allowing the killers to get notified so they can just get their items fast, as they’re confident they can simply get away in time.

There seems to be a rich blend of influences at play in your soundtrack for Stray. Were you drawing upon your own musical background or did you have to look beyond this to find the right sound? Sometimes, on other projects, I struggle for a long time to find the right sound (when I’m asked to mix several different genres, for instance). So… video games are back, then? Now that all that Pandemic nonsense is officially gone forever (lol), it finally seems that video game companies can put out games again. Our Game of the Year longlist surpassed 50 games, and it would have been so easy to make a top 20, but since we’re masochists, we’ve pruned it down to the best of the best. These three Nintendo Land attractions alone make the game a worthwhile pick-up ten years on, and support the argument that the Wii U could have been so much more if other studios bothered to raise their games to meet its singular specs. This is an unfortunate quality it inarguably shares with the Atari Jaguar, which swiftly became a dumping ground for 16-bit ports instead of experiences making the most of its processing power – but that’s a whole other piece for another anniversary.
