Most fans who come back to the saga after a few years arrive with the same question about what order to take it in. Release order is the answer most people use, and it remains the cleanest first watch for anyone meeting Hogwarts for the first time. Chronological in-universe order exists for the smaller group of viewers who already know how the story ends and want the prequel material to set up Voldemort’s rise rather than to follow it.

We watched several films in 2025, and the year handed us a rare gift. The same picture won at the National Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle, LAFCA, the Sight and Sound poll, and the Academy Awards. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another earned those titles, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners came close enough that we understand the critics who flipped the order.

Television’s binge era began with House of Cards in February 2013, when Netflix released all 13 episodes of its first prestige drama on a single Friday. At the time, all-at-once looked like the industry’s obvious future. It wasn’t. It turned out to be one release tactic among several, and which one a platform picks has never been mainly about what a story needs, it’s about what keeps someone paying.

Every movie on this list survives a second viewing, which is the only test of cinema that has really held up since Roger Ebert proposed it for his Great Movies project before his death in 2013. We mixed genres and decades on purpose: a 1994 American prison drama sits next to a Korean class satire, an Australian chase film, a Hong Kong mood piece, and a hand-drawn Japanese animation, because no algorithm is going to serve up that range on its own.

Every few years, a television series comes along that makes you cancel your plans for the weekend. You sit down after dinner, start the first episode, and look up 4 hours later wondering where the time went. The next night you do it again. And the night after that. By the end of the week you are recommending it to friends with a sincerity that borders on desperation, because you need someone to talk to about what you saw. We have been chasing that feeling for a long time at Plex.
