Will Whelan, 2023 Centennial graduate, was chosen by the Texas Rangers in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball draft July 12. Whelan has pitched for the Minnesota Gophers for three seasons and recently transferred the University of South Carolina. With the Gophers this season, he threw 16 innings in 12 games with a 6.75 earned run average. Last season he threw 40 innings in 20 games with a 6.75 ERA. In three seasons, he threw 74 2/3 innings in 49 games with 84 strikeouts.
Muscles and faith: Timmy Ball thrives as Bethel athlete
Blessed with strength and agility, powered by determination and inspired by faith, Timmy Ball has emerged as one of the top track-and-field athletes in the MIAC. The Bethel University junior-to-be from Centennial also plays football for the Royals although he missed last season with an injury. At this year’s MIAC outdoor meet, Ball was discus champion with a throw of 172 feet, 5 inches, placed third in shot put with 52-9 1/4 and was fifth in hammer throw with 168-11.

Burned, rebuilt, repeated: Forest View Hotel
The Forest View Hotel was an iconic building located on the southeast corner of Broadway Avenue and Lake Street. Its unique, chamfered facade was branded with Hamm's beer advertisements and owned by the Theodore Hamm Brewing Company. It was also a doomed building that was plagued by fire, as if the very ground on which it sat was predisposed to burn.

City searching for new home for City Hall, NOHOA offices
The City of North Oaks and the North Oaks Home Owners’ Association (NOHOA) are on the hunt for new office space. Recent planning work has revealed that their current landlord is unwilling to extend their rental agreements beyond 2032. The revelation came when the city hired Steve Chirhart of TaTatonka Real Estate Advisors, who is also a North Oaks resident, to conduct a survey of commercial real estate options in North Oaks.
Black bear spotted moving throughout North Oaks
The City of North Oaks and residents have been tracking the movement of a black bear throughout the community. The bear was first spotted on May 27 off Hodgson Road, just north of the Wildflower entrance. Since then, sightings have been reported on Catbird Lane, Ridge Road, North Mallard Road, Pheasant Lane, and in the Deer Hills neighborhood. Additional households have reported evidence of bear activity such as bent-over bird feeders and rummaged-through trash cans.
Window open to file for council, mayor
The window is now open for candidates to file to run for the North Oaks City Council and mayoral seat. There will be a total of three positions to fill in the next election. Mayor Krista Wolter and council members Andrew Gaspard and Mark Azman have terms expiring at the end of 2026. The mayor’s seat is a two-year term, and the council seats are four-year terms.
