I didn’t expect to feel out of place. When I moved from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh, I told myself it would be an adjustment but nothing I couldn’t handle. I had always been someone who took risks and tried new things. I came from nothing and was raised in the center of Los Angeles, a true melting pot. Rich or poor, it didn’t matter. We all had stories to share, experiences to compare and families that grounded us. In LA, I was constantly surrounded by energy, culture, diversity and traffic, of course.

It is failing quietly, in ways most people will not notice until the ambulance does not come. Pennsylvania lost nearly 400 agencies between 2013 and 2017. More agencies have since shuttered, leaving around 1,200 operating in the state today. At the same time, more than half of EMS agencies report operating deficits, according to statewide EMS studies and supporting reporting.

During an education committee meeting April 14, district officials presented updates on the implementation of the plan, which aims to close 12 schools and nine buildings, reconfigure grade models and phase out magnet programs at the elementary level.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority’s board of directors approved an implementation plan for a Downtown transit revitalization investment district (TRID) that could plug funding holes for major Golden Triangle development projects. TRID funds generally finance “transit-oriented” projects that could not otherwise continue without the program’s monetary support. “There are projects that are ready to go,” said URA Board Chair Yarone Zober.
