Winter shelter to open amid high unhoused numbers, lower tent count

With temperatures dropping and more people experiencing homelessness than in recent fall seasons, Allegheny County’s main winter shelter is being cemented into the hilly interior of the North Side. Similar to past years, the county’s Department of Human Services (ACDHS) set Nov. 15 as the opening date for the shelter, providing 140 beds in a community facility partially turned into a temporary respite, in addition to more than 90 additional beds at three other shelters.

With scores of new homes planned, Homewood sees citations, funding hurdles and eviction

When Alma Hicks stepped out of her place in Homewood, she was surrounded by properties cited as unsafe by the city. Most of them, including the brownstone in which she lives, are under new ownership: A subsidiary of Rising Tide Partners, a nonprofit with a mission of restoring communities. Walking toward Hamilton Avenue, Hicks pointed out properties owned by Rising Tide. Earlier this year, the nonprofit wrested control of 93 properties in Homewood through the use of the conservatorship law.

No Kings protests return to Downtown Pittsburgh, other area sites

“No Kings” protests meant to highlight and counter Trump administration actions characterized by some as authoritarian brought a range of voices and messages to Pittsburgh-area streets Saturday. At the downtown Pittsburgh event, following the singing of “America the Beautiful” shortly before 1 p.m., Legal Director Vic Walczak of the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania took to a stage Saturday accompanied by a Donald Trump puppet.
