Inspired by a post by Jonathan Glazier, format creator and executive producer of altmedia. For years, the television pitch had a familiar shape. You developed an idea, wrote a treatment, made a deck, perhaps shot a sizzle, and tried to persuade a broadcaster to commission it. I have watched filmmakers follow much the same path. Make the film. Submit it. Hope a festival, distributor or platform opens the door.

Microdrama has grown from a $500 million market in China in 2021 to a global category worth $1.4 billion in 2024, forecast to reach $10 billion by 2030, and localizing that content across languages while keeping a character's voice recognizable is now a core production problem, not an afterthought. The 2026 standard for this specific challenge is cloned multilingual voice IDs: the same character's voice speaking Japanese, Spanish, or Portuguese, rather than a different dub actor hired per market.

A stereotype can be useful for about ten seconds. Here are the ones I see over and over again at Raindance. And none are the principles professionals use: The ruthless producer. The shy teenager. The detective who drinks too much. Each gives an audience an immediate idea of who has entered the story. Yet then the challenge to the writer is: how to make that person worth watching. And more importantly, remember them after the closing credits.

Unlike its American counterparts, British zombie movies aren't usually set in malls.

Sex on screen need not be tragic or wrapped in soft lighting. It can expose vanity, puncture fantasy or turn a sophisticated adult into a stammering fool. That is one reason Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex feels timely. Starring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman, the erotic comedy-thriller follows a young man who becomes the sexual muse of a provocative artist. Desire leads not simply to pleasure, but to obsession, power games, betrayal and murder. In other words: complications.

For independent filmmakers, making a good movie is only half of the struggle since getting an audience can also be tough if there is not enough funding for advertising and distribution of the movie. Contrary to big movie studios, independent filmmakers do not usually have a big team for promotion or celebrities to endorse their films, and therefore, the creation of audience from the beginning of filmmaking is critical.

When filmmakers commission a poster from us at COLONFILM, one recurring problem arrives before the design begins: the stills are too small. Someone is investing in artwork for their film, yet the images supplied are low-resolution copies rather than frames exported from the original video. There can also be uncertainty about who chooses those frames, what the commission includes and how much freedom the designer has. In our experience, those conversations have a direct effect on the work.

Every film begins with an idea. But ideas do not organise locations, negotiate contracts, manage budgets or persuade people to work through the night in the rain. That is the first-time producer's job. A producer turns creative ambition into practical reality. You do not need to know everything before producing your first film. You do, however, need enough knowledge to ask intelligent questions, recognise danger and keep the production moving forward.

I recorded the most important voiceover in my film on a crappy laptop mic in a hotel room in Southern California. I had a rough script for a pivotal fire truck scene, a turning point that carries a lot of emotion for the story and for me, and I wanted to hear it against the day's rough cut, so I read it in a single take. It was not an easy read. My eyes teared up hearing myself say the words out loud, maybe for the first time ever. My voice breaks twice.
