Writing an email to a potential investor takes about ten minutes of your time. Being ready for the reply can take months. That gap catches a lot of first-time filmmakers and even some seasoned ones. The script is finished, the pitch deck sizzles, someone mentions a friend who "puts money into things," and the email goes out that night. Then, after you've checked your inbox (perhaps a little too obsessively), the reply comes back: "Interesting. Tell me more.

January is a wonderful hiding place. You can put your screenplay there. Your first short. Your plan to become a director. That promise to learn how your camera actually works. Then January arrives, and somehow you are still waiting. Give your ambition something more useful than another promise: a date in your diary, a skill you can practise and a project you can move forward. Raindance's autumn programme offers practical ways to tackle the problems that keep filmmakers stuck.

You already know how to meet deadlines, solve problems and work with people. Here is how to bring those skills into filmmaking. Perhaps you run a business, manage projects, teach, practise law or work in healthcare. Your career looks respectable. Yet the ambition to make films keeps returning. You will need to learn the craft. But professional experience has already taught you things a production needs: preparation, negotiation, responsibility and the ability to keep going when plans collapse.

A film festival has two great moments. The first is when the lights go down and an audience discovers a film. The second is when that film leaves the festival and finds an audience of its own. I'm delighted to say that two debut features from our June 2026 Raindance programme have secured UK theatrical releases: and Child. They could hardly be more different. One is a feverish, near future thriller starring television sensation Connor Storrie.

Inspired by a post by Jonathan Glazier, format creator and executive producer of altmedia. For years, the television pitch had a familiar shape. You developed an idea, wrote a treatment, made a deck, perhaps shot a sizzle, and tried to persuade a broadcaster to commission it. I have watched filmmakers follow much the same path. Make the film. Submit it. Hope a festival, distributor or platform opens the door.

Microdrama has grown from a $500 million market in China in 2021 to a global category worth $1.4 billion in 2024, forecast to reach $10 billion by 2030, and localizing that content across languages while keeping a character's voice recognizable is now a core production problem, not an afterthought. The 2026 standard for this specific challenge is cloned multilingual voice IDs: the same character's voice speaking Japanese, Spanish, or Portuguese, rather than a different dub actor hired per market.

A stereotype can be useful for about ten seconds. Here are the ones I see over and over again at Raindance. And none are the principles professionals use: The ruthless producer. The shy teenager. The detective who drinks too much. Each gives an audience an immediate idea of who has entered the story. Yet then the challenge to the writer is: how to make that person worth watching. And more importantly, remember them after the closing credits.

Unlike its American counterparts, British zombie movies aren't usually set in malls.

Sex on screen need not be tragic or wrapped in soft lighting. It can expose vanity, puncture fantasy or turn a sophisticated adult into a stammering fool. That is one reason Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex feels timely. Starring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman, the erotic comedy-thriller follows a young man who becomes the sexual muse of a provocative artist. Desire leads not simply to pleasure, but to obsession, power games, betrayal and murder. In other words: complications.
