Seven is a curious number. Psychologists tell us it is about the maximum number of ideas most people can comfortably hold in their minds at once. Storytellers have known this for centuries. Seven days. Seven virtues. Seven deadly sins. Seven notes in a musical scale. Seven is the rhythm of memory. I’ve discovered that seven is also an excellent way to understand a filmmaking career. If you cannot explain your strategy in seven simple ideas, you probably don’t have one.

Every few years the entertainment industry falls in love. Not with a film. Not with a filmmaker. With a technology. I’ve watched this happen for more than thirty-five years. First it was digital video. Then interactive television. Then 3D. Virtual Reality arrived promising to replace cinemas. NFTs were going to reinvent ownership. The Metaverse was apparently where we would all be living by now. Today the conversation has moved on to AI-generated films, YouTube creators and microdramas.

By Saturday morning, most filmmakers think they should be creating. Sometimes the better choice is to refill the well. One of the greatest misconceptons about creativity is that it comes only from working harder. In my experience, the opposite is often true. Creativity arrives after you’ve given your imagination something worth chewing on. Every great filmmaker is really a collector.
