This month, J.J. Martin – founder of luxury lifestyle brand La DoubleJ – shares the special things that add some joy to her everyday. These long-lasting perfumes make you smell amazing all day – seriously, people will stop you in the street
I can think of no greater compliment than “you smell great.” It’s particularly annoying, then, that it’s only when someone leans in for a hug that I hear it. I layer body lotions and oils and hair perfumes; I spend an unholy amount of time in the laundry aisle of the supermarket. Not to mention the perfume itself, which I’ve sprayed on just about every pulse point. You’d think that would be enough to leave a trail. Reader, it is not.
This goat's cheese beetroot tart deserves a spot on your Sunday lunch table
If you're hosting friends and family for Sunday lunch this weekend, feeding vegetarian guests can be a conundrum. Indeed, for a meal that's often centred around meat, what do you serve that's just as good as the main event? A suggestion: Pickled beetroot tart with goat’s cheese, which is as delicious as it is lovely to look at on the table – so good in fact, non-vegetarian guests might be tempted to load a slither onto their dinner plate, too.
James McAvoy on swapping the spotlight for the director's chair with California Schemin'
Being on screen? According to James McAvoy, 46, that’s the easy part. ‘It’s nearly two years of my life that I’ve been directing, and getting back to doing some acting now, f*** me, it’s an absolute doddle,’ he laughs. ‘It’s the first time in my life when I’ve felt like, “People pay me for this? This is so easy!”’ He’s just returned from filming the supernatural drama Faith, alongside Adolescence’s Erin Doherty.
The big 2026 hair trends you'll see everywhere, from the 'box bob' to 'sugared brunette'
Does the start of a new season ever pass us by without the itch for a transformation? There's something about this metamorphosis – putting the winter coat back in the wardrobe, dusting off your sandals – that gives us a hankering for change. When it comes to beauty, where better to start than with your hair? Whether that means embracing an entirely different colour or adopting a fresh style, hairstylists also agree that there’s no time like the present.
Amal Clooney goes lighter than ever with new hair transformation – it's perfect for spring
Amal Clooney's hair is the stuff of dreams, isn't it? Deliciously thick, perpetually glossy and so very long. The colour is also something to envy: a rich, chocolate brunette that always looks glassy. This spring, she's cemented her status as our colour muse with a hair transformation that we're screenshotting for the warmer months ahead. Why? Because Amal has gone lighter than ever.
The 8 books that mean the most to Tayari Jones
With fans ranging from Oprah to Barack Obama to Ann Patchett, Atlanta-based novelist Tayari Jones is a literary force to be reckoned with, know for her deeply human, emotionally resonant storytelling. As her fourth book – Kin, a story of friendship set in segregated 1950s America – hits shelves, we caught up with Tayari to talk about the 8 books that mean the most to her... My favourite book character is… Janie from Their Eyes Were Watching God, the celebrated 1937 novel by Zora Neale Hurston.
Can you really change your ‘set point weight’? Experts suggest 8 ways we can outsmart it
The scales can be frustrating. Mine, in particular, seem to have a very good memory. I can eat well, move more, shift a few pounds, only for the weight to slowly edge back on. Or I’ll get close to the number I’ve had in my head for years, and that last half stone simply won’t budge, no matter how many chicken salads (no dressing) I eat. It’s at this familiar point in the cycle that I normally wonder if I’m missing something obvious – or if my body is perhaps playing by a different set of rules.
