SOUTHBURY — An 18-year-old was arrested earlier this month in connection with vandalism at the home of a Region 15 School District teacher, police said. Brooks Harrington is charged with third-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal trespass, according to the Southbury Police Department. Police said Harrington turned himself in to law enforcement on Sept. 6 after a warrant was issued for his arrest in the July 31 incident.

WATERBURY — A 5-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a crash Thursday afternoon, police said. The child was riding a bike in his family's driveway when he lost control and went into traffic on the 100 block of Plaza Avenue shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday, according to Waterbury police. The driveway declined toward the street, which caused the boy to go down the driveway, authorities said. The boy was taken to a local area hospital with minor injuries, police said.

NEW HARTFORD — An online fundraiser has been launched to support the family of a local firefighter in need of a kidney transplant. Zach Marcus, 33, is undergoing dialysis while confronting end-stage renal disease, according to the family. Marcus started out as a firefighter cadet with the New Hartford Fire Department at the age 14. Over nearly 20 years, he has continued to volunteer with the department and attained the rank of captain, although he has since had to step back from the role.

A recent letter to the editor in the Republican-American by Richard F. Adamski ("DSA candidates are breath of fresh air, no more radical than GOP," Sept. 14) offered an opinion that the Democratic Socialists of America movement provided a viable alternative to the Republican Party, and that criticisms of the DSA were greatly exaggerated.

Courtesy of the Thomaston Police Department THOMASTON — Town police arrested a second person Thursday in an elaborate scam that relied on a stolen identity and fake documents to fraudulently withdraw $33,000 from local banks, officials said.

With Automated License Plate Readers, like Flock cameras, two things can both be true. They can be important tools in fighting crime, allowing police to find suspected violent criminals and domestic abusers. They are also another step toward a surveillance state that many people do not support and that can easily be misused. Connecticut has tried to find the middle ground. Bipartisan support in the General Assembly led Connecticut in early 2026 to regulate ALPRs at the state level.
