WATERBURY — A gathering was held at the basketball court near Waterbury PAL Wednesday in memory of the two people killed in a shooting last weekend. Trey-von Dunbar, 22, and Zaniya Dawkins, 18, were killed in a shooting at LA 42 night club on East Main Street shortly after midnight July 5 in Waterbury. No arrests had been made in the connection with the shooting as of Thursday.

TORRINGTON — As Torrington residents wait for their power to be restored this week after the devastating Fourth of July thunderstorms, neighborhood eatery Vinny’s Restaurant & Pizza is keeping them fed with free, hot meals.

TORRINGTON — A 23-year-old Barkhamsted man is in critical but stable condition after crashing into a fallen tree in Torrington Sunday, police said. He is being treated at St. Mary's Hospital, according to police. The crash occurred in the 600 block of South Main Street. Torrington police and emergency responders said they arrived at the scene around 2:58 a.m. on Sunday to find two affected vehicles: a silver Subaru Impreza and a white Subaru Crosstrek, both with heavy front-end damage.

WATERBURY — A motorcyclist was seriously injured Wednesday in a crash that closed Harpers Ferry Road, police said. The crash took place at the intersection with Plank Road, according to Waterbury police Sgt. Joseph Morais. Morais said the motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, but noted that he was conscious and alert. Morais said the road has been temporarily closed due to an ongoing investigation into the wreck.

BRIDGEPORT — A Waterbury man has been sentenced to more than a year in prison after admitted to trafficking guns, officials say. Anthony Primavera, a 22-year-old, was sentenced in federal court in Bridgeport to 1½ years in prison followed by two years of supervised release, according to a release from U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut David Sullivan.

Their voices matter, particularly when residents are looking for reassurance that everyone belongs and deserves respect.

During my college days, years ago when I was a part time stock boy, Mr. Lester, a wise older Sears salesman at the old Naugatuck Valley Mall, once told me: “A man spends the first half of his life gathering things, and the second half giving them away.” That thought stuck onto my mind and I am reminded of it more and more due to current circumstances affecting Waterbury.
