A resort spa menu will show you eight facials and sell you maybe five genuinely different treatments. Spa facials get listed three ways at once: generic type names like hydrating and brightening, product-house branding like Sodashi or Guinot, and in-house signature names that mean nothing once you leave the property. The fix is the same one that works on a massage menu. Choose by the outcome you want for your skin, not by the name printed on the page. The price is the second problem.

Little Palm Island is the top of the Florida Keys, and it gets there by subtraction. A private 4.5-acre island off the Lower Keys, reachable only by boat or seaplane, with 30 bungalow suites, one restaurant, no children under 16, and a spa built into a thatched pavilion at the water’s edge. SpaTerre runs five oceanfront treatment rooms inside a two-story thatched complex, each looking out to the Gulf or onto an interior reflection pond.

The Watsons built their hacienda on 172 acres of high desert outside Tucson in 1912, weeks after Arizona became a state. The stone hearth they laid is still in the lobby. The adobe walls, the wrought-iron chandeliers, the botanical garden: none of it is a recreation. It accumulated. The Sonoran Spa’s best asset runs on the same logic. The Spa Wellness Garden grows the treatment ingredients: citrus in spring, aloe and mint through the summer, pomegranates in autumn.

L’Auberge de Sedona doesn’t compete with Sedona’s mega-spas on square footage, and it doesn’t try to. It folds Oak Creek, the sycamores, and the rust-colored cliffs into the stay so completely that the landscape reads as an amenity. It suits couples who want setting and holistic range over spa scale. A $30 million renovation finished in 2025, adding 70 Cliffs rooms above Uptown Sedona and the Duck Pond Pool. It left the spa alone.

The Arizona Biltmore opened on February 23, 1929, and the interlocking concrete blocks on its facade, cast from a textile pattern by Frank Lloyd Wright’s apprentice Albert Chase McArthur, are still there. That is the whole proposition: a 39-acre resort where the architecture is the reason to book, not a plaque in the lobby. LXR refreshed dining, pools, and rooms in 2021 without touching the bones, then opened Tierra Luna Spa in 2023.

Royal Palms doesn’t do scale. That’s deliberate. The nine-acre estate at the base of Camelback Mountain opened in 1929 as a financier’s winter residence, and the 119-room property still reads residential where most Phoenix resorts read corporate. It suits couples who want a small, botanically serious spa more than a big one. Alvadora Spa holds a Forbes Four-Star rating and runs eight treatment rooms across private indoor-outdoor courtyards. Two things separate it from generic resort spas.

The hotel spa menu lists a body wrap at $185 and a body scrub at $170, one line apart, with no indication that one is usually the setup for the other. Nothing on the page tells you whether booking both is smart sequencing or paying twice for the same idea. The short version: a scrub sands off the dead-cell layer on your skin’s surface, and a body wrap spa treatment applies a mud, seaweed, or cream mask, seals your body in cloth or film, and lets heat drive it in.

Mud baths and clay treatments sit on hotel spa menus at massage prices, sold in language that promises minerals and detox while telling you almost nothing about what happens in the room. A mud bath spa treatment is worth booking. Just not for the reason printed on the menu. The numbers first. The soak itself runs about 15 to 20 minutes, but budget one to two hours for the full visit, including the shower and whatever the property stacks after it.

The region’s most famous free hot spring is currently illegal to enter. Forest Service Order 05-12-52-25-02, signed July 2, 2025, closes Deep Creek Hot Springs and the adjacent Aztec Falls area through June 7, 2027, citing repeated drowning deaths and near-daily search-and-rescue calls in the canyon. Soaking in hot springs in Southern California through 2026 is a booking decision, not a hiking one. Price is the first filter.

Santa Barbara spent decades calling this property the Fess Parker (the waterfront resort the Davy Crockett actor built on 24 beachfront acres), and the Hilton reflag never quite overwrote the name or the bones. What stands today is the largest resort on the Santa Barbara waterfront: some 360 balconied rooms across from East Beach, with the zoo next door and the bike path out front. Its spa is the smallest thing about it.
