Memorial service for William Hullinger, 88, of Bedford will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at Cummings Family Funeral Home in Bedford at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until service time. Brent Michael Meyer, 53, of Alta died Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. Funeral services will take place Thursday, Aug. 6, at 10:30 a.m. at Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta. Burial will be in Elk Township Cemetery in rural Alta. Visitation will take place Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 3-7 p.m. at Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Brent’s name.

Sad news for us old gray Panthers that St. Mary’s will throw in the towel and participate on the public school teams in any sport, Tornadoes now. Our Uncle John Murray was the coach back in the day, when the Black & White fell in the substate tournament by a whisker to Emmetsburg Catholic (long gone). We were bummed last week by the announcement that St. Mary’s High School is ending its athletic program after a century of competition. Beginning this fall the former Panthers will compete as Tornadoes on Storm Lake High School sports teams. Dwindling enrollment and lack of coaches have made it impossible for the Panthers to field teams. There’s great affection for the Panthers in our family. The Cullens are proud alumni of St. Mary’s. All five brothers played sports (to varying degrees of success).

Pete Hegseth is trying to diminish the contributions of women in the military, and that’s putting it delicately. The ACLU was more blunt when it said, on one of their webpages, that Hegseth wants women out of the military. Full stop. This impetus was clear early on when Hegseth fired senior female military leaders. The brand of Christian nationalism that Hegseth subscribes to feeds his latest decisions to deny promotions to female military personnel.
