ICE tactics raise alarms in wake of Biddeford shooting
More than a month before an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, the same agent was involved in a similar vehicle stop. In both cases, David Brouillette and other ICE officers surveilled a house, looking for the owner of a car at that address. The car pulled out. The man driving was from Latin America, but was neither the owner of the car nor the target of the operation. The agents made their move anyway.

On July 21, I watched the Appropriations Committee hearing with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine. They were testifying in support of their request to receive $33 billion for military training and payroll in support of the Iran war. The $33 billion is a portion of the overall request for $87.6 billion. The 2027 Defense budget is $1.5 trillion. Why is that not sufficient to cover training and payroll for our military?

Jay-based schools accept 4 resignations as district works to fill vacancies
JAY — Regional School Unit 73 is working to fill teaching and support vacancies before classes begin Aug. 27 after directors accepted four employee resignations July 23. The board voted unanimously to accept, with regret, the resignations of Spruce Mountain Elementary School Principal Patrick St. Clair and teachers Avery Cloutier, Sunny Rose Juzukonis and Eric Taylor. No reasons for the departures were discussed during the meeting.
