In most countries and communities, in the new year, families unite to celebrate. These occasions offer an extraordinary opportunity to learn more about family traditions and stories, and they provide a great chance to connect this knowledge with academic content. Integrating the families of multilingual learners of English (MLEs) in the writing process contributes to recognizing and valuing students’ linguistic diversity and cultural assets.

Without a doubt, repetition is essential for young learners to improve both fluency and accuracy, but it can quickly become stale if not approached creatively. As primary English language teaching (ELT) educators, finding the balance between repetitive tasks (or activities) and introducing new ones can be a fun challenge, especially when you want to maintain similar levels of engagement. Take a moment to reflect on the types of activities you and your students enjoy together in the classroom.

Welcome to Part 2 of A Year of Ecoliteracy Opportunities: 12 Classroom Activities for Multilingual Learners! In Part 1, I shared monthly activities for January through June to help your students develop both language skills and environmental awareness. Let’s continue our journey through the year with even more creative and impactful ways to celebrate environmental days with our multilingual learners of English (MLEs) from July to December.

Happy December! In Part 1 of my final blog for this year, I am offering a monthly look at environmental days you can celebrate with your students throughout 2025. There are several environmental recognition days each month, so feel free to choose any of these observances, but here I have selected one for each month (January through June), with a suggestion for at least one accompanying activity with a language focus.

The debate about oversimplifying a text for multilingual learners has been a spirited one. One side argues that giving students a text that is significantly above a their current abilities leads to a demoralizing experience and no comprehension. The other side suggests that with simplification, the content doesn’t present students with real-world skills. We actually say yes to both sides.
