VERONA — Monroe’s boys and girls won the Division 2 titles at the Verona Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 5. The boys team finished with 71 points, six ahead of Fort Atkinson, while the girls had 79 points, five better than McFarland. There were 11 teams in Division 2, and more than 30 teams at the invite. Braylin Cleary led Monroe’s girls squad with a sixth place finish (20:29.7).

Stoughton 33, Monroe 27 STOUGHTON — The Cheesemakers suffered a tough third loss to open the season in Week 3. The host Vikings had 417 yards of offense, balances between 203 through the air and another 214 on the ground. Stoughton QB Tate Schneider was 15-for-19 passing with four TDs, and Jon Wogsland had 159 yards rushing and a TD on 27 carries. Monroe (0-3, 0-1 Badger Small) will host Fort Atkinson (1-2, 0-1) in Week 4.

MONROE — A tribute to the legendary Everly Brothers kicks off Monroe Arts Center’s (MAC) 52nd Season with a performance Sept. 11 in the Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall. “The Everly Set” features critically acclaimed musicians Sean Altman and Jack Skuller, playing hit songs by the Everly Brothers including “Bye Bye Love,” “Wake Up Little Susie,” “All I Have To Do Is Dream,” and more.

John King passed away suddenly on September 3, 2026, following a heart attack. John was born on December 31, 1953, in Wichita, Kansas, to Hugh and Betty King. He grew up in Wichita, where he met his wife, Kathy, at Heights High School. He was a proud graduate of Kansas State University, where he earned a degree in Food and Animal Science. In 1983, John and Kathy moved to Monroe, Wisconsin, when John accepted a job at Purity Cheese.

Susan M. Fox, age 65 of Monroe died Sunday, September 6, 2026 at U.W. Hospital in Madison. She was born on April 4, 1961 in Monroe, the daughter of Roy and Ann (Blumer) Rufer. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1979 and received her BS in Nursing at Edgewood College in Madison in 1983. Sue married Jeff H. Fox on Nov. 21, 1987 in Monroe. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Monroe Clinic and Hospital for 30 years; and recently was MDS at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie, retiring July 3, 2026.

Eunice Mae Bergum, age 93, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2026, at the New Glarus Home in New Glarus, Wisconsin. She was born on August 29, 1933, in Wards Grove, Illinois, she was the beloved daughter of Charles Martin Sr. and Bertha (Kant) Martin. A graduate of Warren High School, class of 1951. She lived in Warren until her marriage to John Bergum at West Wiota Lutheran Church. Following their marriage Eunice and John raised their family in South Wayne and resided there for 74 years.

NEW GLARUS — The Cheesemakers stunned the Raiders on Sept. 3, running to a 1-1 draw in a nonconference game between Green County’s two high school soccer programs, the first regular season between the two programs in about a decade. “Kudos to those guys — they have some really good players. They moved the ball really fast and went to our outsides,” Sugar River coach Bob Gentilli said. “They did everything they could do, and we did everything we could do.

Redbirds fourth at Lancaster mini meet LANCASTER — Darlington girls golf finished fourth as a team at the Lancaster mini meet on Sept. 3, finishing with a 287. Lancaster won the meet with a 262. The Redbirds were paced by Clara McElrath and Erin McGranahan, who each carded a 70, and Kaedyn Komprood, who shot a 71.

STOUGHTON — The Monroe-New Glarus CheeseKnights competed at Stoughton High School and came away with an 88-78 victory on Sept. 3. “This was truly a team effort from start to finish,” MNG head coach Rachel Root said. “Several girls had back-to-back events and had to practice racing while tired, and they stepped up when their team needed them. There were also several breakout swims and personal-best performances.
