To the Editor, I read Pierre-Yves Bovin, Chief Communications and Engagement Officer, Alto’s submitted article with interest. To paraphrase, he said Alto is going to be built. This company that came from nowhere to start a massive project not mentioned during the last election can take your land, but it is OK because they do it legally. Alto is sounding more like a presidential ball room than a project that will unite Canada. Mr. Bovin talks about benefits for future generations.

Alfred and Plantagenet adds new candidates for municipal election
Two new candidates have submitted nomination papers for Alfred and Plantagenet’s upcoming municipal election on Monday, October 26. As of Monday, August 3, incumbent Ward 2 Councillor Ian Walker and Stephanie Rieux have filed nomination papers, joining Sylvain Boudreault in the race for the two Ward 2 seats. Alfred and Plantagenet’s two wards each elect two councillors, in addition to the mayor.
Five candidates vying for North Glengarry mayor as candidate list grows
Nomination papers continue to be filed in North Glengarry for the upcoming municipal election on Monday, October 26. As of Monday, August 3, five candidates are vying for the position of mayor. Josée Jeaurond submitted her nomination documents on Monday, July 20, joining incumbent Mayor Jamie MacDonald, Cody Pierce, Michel Levert, and Victor Brassard in the mayoral race.
Casselman municipal election candidate list taking shape
As of Monday, August 3, several candidates have filed nomination papers for the upcoming municipal election in Casselman. Residents will elect a mayor and four councillors on Monday, October 26. Currently, incumbent councillor Paul Groulx is the only candidate to have filed nomination papers for mayor. Incumbent Mayor Geneviève Lajoie has not yet filed nomination papers seeking re-election.
South Glengarry land to become county forest
The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) will soon have a new tract of County Forest in South Glengarry. On July 20, SDG Council authorized the Director of Transportation Services—whose department also oversees forestry, to finalize the acquisition and transfer of a 74.5-acre parcel in the Township of South Glengarry to be used as a County Forest. A series of financial terms are part of the agreement between the counties and property owner Charles McDonald.
People and places of the past, visitors from the present at the Vankleek Hill Museum
The combination of sharing Vankleek Hill’s history and welcoming visitors to town continues this summer at the Vankleek Hill Museum and Tourist Information Centre. Sophie Lauzon supervises the operation of the museum, which is owned by the Vankleek Hill and District Historical Society. She said more people have been visiting the museum this summer. “We’re seeing more people than we have since COVID,” Lauzon said.
Police patrol Ottawa River
Hawkesbury OPP and Russell County OPP officers spent the past long weekend conducting joint marine patrols with the Sûreté du Québec on the Ottawa River. They concentrated their efforts on covering the area from the Carillon Dam to L’Orignal and the mouth of the Rouge River. These coordinated patrols help promote safe and responsible boating while enhancing enforcement and public safety on our shared waterways.
A grand Glengarry Highland Games
The village of Maxville became a Scottish city on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1 during the 77th edition of the Glengarry Highland Games. The spectacular Friday evening tattoo, with 61 pipe bands, the highest number in over a decade, the 1,447 pipers and drummers led by World Champion Drum Major Emma Barr in the massed bands performance over-filled the infield and gave a performance of Amazing Grace that brought tremendous applause from the huge crowds surrounding the infield.
Two or more candidates for every position in Champlain election
There are now two or more candidates for every position on Champlain Township Council in the October 26 municipal election. As of August 3, Corina Parisien and incumbent Normand Riopel are the two candidates for Mayor. In Ward 1 Vankleek Hill, the candidates for the two council seats as of August 3 are Bruce Golden and Martin Kaufman. The two candidates for Councillor in Ward 2 L’Orignal are incumbent Michel Lalonde and Roch Pilon.
