Photography: Thomas Lyons Best known for his swimming-pool paintings, produced after leaving the UK for California, Hockney documented his early life in Yorkshire and his social circle in London’s Notting Hill, becoming bolder with age.

Set in the near future world of 2034, Gener8ion unfolds as an immersive audiovisual experience in ten parts. Through several warped, speculative stories and sound installations, director Romain Gavras and music producer Surkin imagine dystopian versions of a moment eight years from today. Opening today at 180 Studios, the exhibition explores ideas around youth, identity, technology and social fragmentation, projecting them into futures that feel both distant and uncomfortably believable.

On the western ridge of Bowen Island, this house by Vancouver practice SMStudio was completed in 2023 and is now being sold again by West Coast Modern. The cedar-clad building occupies a rocky clearing surrounded by mature Douglas firs, with two historic burnt-out stumps retained as defining features of the site.

From pared-back vintage charm to laboratory chic, today’s go-to spots are reframing the appeal of the scoop. Still nostalgic, still joyful, just a bit more… grown-up.

Built in 1930, Can Jordi stands beside the village square in Sa Cabaneta, a small town in Marratxí, Mallorca. The three-storey house retains exposed timber beams, stone walls and handmade floor tiles, with rooms arranged around a central patio at its centre.

The hotel restaurant: not a term that exudes confidence, is it. Too often the in-house dining room is a last resort, a quiet all-hours affair devoid of atmosphere — ‘good enough’ for a hotel guest who may never return. But lo — travellers are savvier now, with rising standards for the places they stay, and this has spurred an awakening among London hoteliers. In the past few years we’ve watched a string of hotel-restaurants open with serious ambition in and out of the kitchen.

Designed by, and for, Isle of Skye practice Rural Design, Tinhouse occupies a secluded position above Loch Pooltiel on the island’s west coast. Completed in 2013, the one-bedroom house takes cues from the Scottish Hebridean landscape, pairing a sharply pitched aluminium exterior with a restrained palette of timber, concrete and colour drawn from the grasses, mosses and coastal vegetation.

It’s been four years since the stars aligned on an ancient London thoroughfare called the Strand. A traffic diversion, a designated island, a deft landscaping plan and an outdoor art programme resulted in a 170-metre car-free swath where tens of thousands of people walk, gather and lounge every day with views of Somerset House and two centuries-old steeples.

Designed in 1977 as his own home and architectural practice, this villa in Geel, northern Belgium, offers a rare insider’s look into the work of architect Louis Wilms. Conceived as a place where work and home life could overlap, the house combines expressive form with a highly considered approach to daily living.
