Strikewave
Newsletter (Digital),
Non-profit
Strikewave was founded as a newsletter in October of 2018 with one goal: bringing worker struggle, from the shop floor to the picket line, to your inbox—and we hope to help you continue the fight along the way. We want to offer fresh perspectives and news useful to everyone from the unorganized worker to the seasoned labor activist.
Since 2018, we’ve incorporated as a certified 501(c)3 nonprofit cooperative corporation in Troy, New York, the one-time home of labor organizer James Connolly. We’ve grown into a publication that commissions and publishes original work and analysis from journalists and activists, and which reaches people across the movement. Our publication is donor-funded and relies on the support of our readers. Source

The pole dancers at North Hollywood’s Star Garden Topless Dive Bar are tenacious. For over six months, they’ve been picketing outside of the club every week, after two were allegedly fired in retaliation for complaining about unsafe conditions. Starting without the infrastructure that traditional labor unions can provide, like strike funds to sustain them and labor lawyers to represent them, the strippers have used their media smarts to crowdfund and cultivate supportive press coverage.
End of the Line: US Railroaders Come Down to the Wire — Strikewave
Kenneth Edwards lives two miles away from Switzer Siding, a stretch of rail line adjacent to the main freighter rail line south of Lafayette, Indiana. The siding was constructed in 2015 to allow freight trains pass each other, clearing the freight traffic that would come from nearby Indianapolis and the heavily congested Chicago trainyards. Or at least it would clear traffic, according to Edwards, if the freight trains were not too long to use the siding.

On the morning of August 26, American University (AU) students filled Bender Arena for convocation, a yearly tradition where freshman and returning classmen are welcomed by faculty and the president. Outside, over 200 American University staff held down a picket line, chanting “no contract, no peace.” The staff, who are represented by SEIU Local 500, had been on strike for 5 days to demand better wages.

Workers at Blizzard Albany want to democratize their workplace, seeking improved work-life balance, fair compensation, and improved benefits, as well as open communication between employees and Activision Blizzard King. To get there, quality assurance (QA) testers at Blizzard’s studio in Albany announced in late July they want to form a union at the company with the help of the Communication Workers of America (CWA). The workers have chosen to organize under the name Game Workers Alliance Albany.
Taking the Shop: An Interview with the Slow Bloom Coffee Cooperative — Strikewave
Strikewave (SW)): How did the Augie’s Coffee union drive inform the creation of Slow Bloom? Erik Lopez (EL): We started off wanting more job security. We wanted baristas that have been working at Augie’s for ten years to have more than a minimum wage. I guess we got tired, and we tried unionizing. Then the owners did us dirty: They told us they would look into our issues, and then next thing we know we’re learning on Instagram that we all got fired—we don’t have any jobs.
"The Workers are Hungry for More": Genwa BBQ Workers Form an Independent Union — Strikewave
Rebecca Nathan remembered receiving the letter in February 2019, because at the time she was preparing to leave Genwa BBQ, the Los Angeles Korean restaurant where she had been working as a hostess and bartender. The message came from the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance (KIWA), a worker center that had been helping some of Nathan’s coworkers file a claim against the restaurant for stealing tips.

There's No Place for Abuse in the House of Labor — Strikewave
On Tuesday, May 25th, reporters with Spotlight Pennsylvania broke that Frank Snyder, the current Secretary-Treasurer of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO and President-elect, would retire before taking office, ending a months-long controversy that resulted in a major investigation into misconduct. Snyder, a long-time union official and member of the United Steelworkers, was accused of creating a hostile work environment at the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO.
Guest Opinion: We've Forgotten America's Workers — Strikewave
Thursday, April 28, 2022, came and went without much fanfare. Unlike other commemorative days, there were no grand speeches about patriotism and sacrifice, no neighborhood BBQs, not even a mattress sale. April 28th is Workers’ Memorial Day, an opportunity to commemorate working people across this country, particularly those who were killed, disabled, or badly injured on the job.
Labor Rights Are Abortion Rights. We Know, Because We’re Fighting for Both — Strikewave
On May 2, 2022, the news broke that the Supreme Court draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization had been leaked. The impact of this draft opinion, which would eliminate the constitutional right to abortion by overruling Roe v. Wade, reverberated across the country. At the Guttmacher Institute, the reproductive rights research and policy nonprofit where we work, our colleagues braced for a devastating new challenge to reproductive rights.
