Nick McCabe / THIS IS RENO I put the Chicago concert on my to-do list quite a while ago when I first saw that they were coming to Reno. I saw them once before when they played at Grand Sierra Resort in 2016, and I remember that being a very good show.

Nevada Cancer Coalition recognized three people and one state program Friday for their work in cancer prevention, early detection and access to care. The awards were presented Sept. 18 during the 2026 Nevada Cancer Control Summit in Reno. Father Edgar Villanueva of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church received the Community Champion Award. Kevin Kiene, a dermatologist with Skin Cancer & Dermatology Institute, and the Nevada State Immunization Program were named Healthcare Partners of the Year.

The City of Sparks will remove dead trees and trim potentially hazardous branches at parks and other city-owned properties over the next few weeks ahead of winter weather, city officials said. Most of the tree removal will take place in city parks, though crews will work at several locations throughout Sparks. City officials said dead trees and branches can pose a safety risk during high winds and winter storms because they may fall. Crews will also trim branches that could present safety concerns.

The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees will meet Sept. 22 to review Superintendent Tiffany McMaster’s entry plan and consider her performance evaluation goals for the 2026-27 school year, along with the district’s strategic plan results and legislative priorities. This week, the public will get a chance to meet candidates for political office at two free nonpartisan public forums being held in Northern and Southern Nevada. Candidates from all parties running for mayor, Congress, county commission and state Assembly will be given time to speak and then answer questions from the audience.

The Reno City Council will consider master plan and zoning changes for a five-acre property on Codexa Way, zoning changes for properties on Talbot Lane and North Virginia Street and several contracts and agreements at its Sept. 23 meeting. The council will also consider a nearly $4.9 million fire apparatus purchase and appointments to the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Commission.

Washoe County is accepting applications for its 2027 Washoe County Leadership Academy, a free six-month program that introduces residents to county government and provides leadership training. The program, offered in partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno Extension, will run from January through June. Participants will attend one full-day session each month, with sessions held on Fridays.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County Board of Commissioners unanimously selected Deputy Executive Director Dale Keller on Friday to become the agency’s next executive director.
