Thunderous Intentions

The Oklahoma City Thunder are undeniably going to need more out of their young core in 2026-27. With a financial crunch coming for the organization this offseason, the front office was able to maximize what it had at its disposal by moving on from Luguentz Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins in separate trades. Each of those pieces are, at least theoretically, replaceable by talent the Thunder still have on the roster.

ESPN's countdown of the top 100 players heading into the 2026-27 NBA season continues, with their list from 100 through 11 recently being revealed. To no surprise, several members of the OKC Thunder have already shown up. With the publication's next reveal set to come in the days ahead, one should expect to see reigning two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's name crack somewhere into the top three-to-five range, which, in turn, would give Oklahoma City seven players mentioned in total.

While the OKC Thunder drag their feet on extending guard Cason Wallace, various other teams around the league are wasting no time setting the market. Ausar Thompson is the latest to receive a payday, as his five-year, $155 million deal is around what people expect Wallace to get. Unfortunately for the Thunder, the deals may keep on coming, and it will only further increase the asking price for their 3-and-D man.

We've almost made it. The Oklahoma City Thunder, along with the vast majority of the NBA, will start training camp on Sept. 29, with their first preseason game coming against the New Orleans Pelicans on Oct. 6. For most teams, this is simply a feeling-out period—getting players back into shape while exploring the talent they've added to the roster in the offseason. For the Thunder, much of the focus will fall upon their young pieces.

With the new season less than a month away, the OKC Thunder still have one official roster spot left to fill. Several prospects like Otega Oweh and Brooks Barnheizer currently loom on two-way contracts, but OKC could resort to free agency to find a more experienced role player. Now just $6.9 million under the second apron, GM Sam Presti doesn't have much cap space to work with.

Cason Wallace could be in line to follow in his fellow classmates' footsteps in the coming weeks with the OKC Thunder. Over the past month and change, a number of 2023 draftees have received rookie-scale extensions with their respective clubs. From Utah's Keyonte George to, most recently, Detroit's Ausar Thompson, the class's top performers are all seemingly netting substantial, long-term paydays ahead of their year-four season. Up to this point, Wallace is one of the few who haven't.

Rooting for a player to get injured is never acceptable. However, accepting that there may be benefits that come as a result of such a situation... that's a bit different. The OKC Thunder could experience the latter this coming campaign following the latest Brandon Ingram update.

While most may chastise OKC Thunder cornerstone Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for his foul line activity, Wizards star Trae Young seems to have a different take on the subject. The biggest critique of SGA's game across the league is how often he shoots free throws.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are in a weird position when it comes to Cason Wallace. Obviously, for the betterment of the team and their chances at a championship this season, they would love for Wallace to play great. However, the better Wallace plays, the more difficult next summer will be for OKC. The more money that Wallace ends up wanting in free agency, the harder it is going to be for the Thunder to duck under the second apron.

It seems one of Victor Wembanyama's primary missions in the NBA is to try and best the OKC Thunder and their players in every way he can. From trying to catapult himself above Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the 2026 MVP race to the perceived importance of specifically besting them in a best-of-seven playoff series, the Spurs star has been quite public about his desire to leapfrog seemingly everyone on Oklahoma City's roster as top dog.
