In parliamentary terms, Phil Piratin’s political career was not a grand success. As one of only two Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) MPs, major parliamentary breakthroughs would have been difficult to achieve.

See thousands of historic artefacts recovered from the muddy Thames riverbed and meet the friendly mudlarks who found them. In this highly interactive exhibition, you will hear the intriguing backstories about the artefacts on display within the museum, which is an old Georgian warehouse that was used to store goods from around the world. Each object reveals a unique story about the people who once lived and worked in London’s Docklands.

Death Cab for Cutie’s 11th studio album, I Built You A Tower, marks the band’s return to their independent roots. Produced and engineered by John Congleton and assembled from a mere three weeks of sessions, the album was recorded at Animal Rites in Los Angeles, as well as the band members’ homes in Seattle, Bellingham, Los Angeles and Portland. The album’s first single, ‘Riptides’, is the band’s 9th #1 at Adult Alternative radio.

Record stores are having a moment in Tower Hamlets. Cigarette Records has set up shop in the Old Street Records bar; Yo Yo Records moved over to Cambridge Heath Road last year. Even long-standing outlets like Flashback Records and Rough Trade have somehow survived the ups and downs of high street culture.

Join creative facilitator F. Zeeshan Choudhury for a series of writing workshops that take inspiration from the rewilded Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. Through a nature walk and guided writing exercises, we will reflect on what comes up as the growth of summer dies down and we adjust to colder weather and shorter days. How can we use the shifting of the seasons and the histories buried deep in the Cemetery Park to think about our own lives and the lives of others?

This is the 90th year of Cable Street. In 1936, thousands of East Enders — Jewish families, Irish dockers, trade unionists, communists and neighbours who’d simply had enough — filled the streets and stopped Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists from marching through. They shall not pass. We’re marking it with a walk through the Cemetery Park, among the people who made that kind of resistance possible. The walk sets off at 6pm and takes about an hour on the main paths.

SlideFest Local brings together participants from Reframing the East End to share their photography and the stories behind their work. Taking place at Oxford House on Wednesday 23rd September, the evening will feature a series of short presentations followed by Q&As, giving participants an opportunity to reflect on photography created through the project alongside their wider artistic practices.

Rich Mix’s cinema programme will be paused for over a year while major renovations are carried out at the venue following a £2.2 million Arts Council grant. Rich Mix, the charity-run arts centre and cinema in Bethnal Green, has announced it will suspend its popular film programme until Autumn 2027. The venue was recently awarded a £2.2 million grant from Arts Council England’s Creative Foundation Fund to carry out major renovation work on its ground-floor space.
